Demi Lovato is considered to be a star who suffered from the 'Disney Curse' due to her long history of mental health issues that have been broadcasted to the public. She has also been extremely open about her struggles. Her eighth album Holy Fvck was then released in August 2022. The album was set up to be a rebellion against Lovato's image as a pop princess with an Instagram Story where one of the label executives says: “You put out whatever music you want, whenever you want to. Break the rules.” to which Demi screamed in excitement. This rebellion can also be seen in the hard-hitting lyrics that caused the majority of songs on the album to be labelled as explicit.

The androgynous look that accompanies her new music follows her opening up about being non-binary. Lovato has overall transitioned from a pop princess to an androgynous rock star.

Neither Lovato nor Gomez have commented on the controversy but #DemiLovatoIsOverParty was trending on Twitter.

In her 2022 appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast she explains that “I had a purity ring that came from my church, like way before Disney Channel even happened. I was like 11 or 12, and that shouldn’t have even been implemented on 11 or 12 year olds.".

Disney has been criticised for using the virginity of young stars as a marketing tool because it caused the media to take an interest in the sexual activity of minors. In her 2021 documentary Dancing With the Devil, Lovato explains that Disney pressured her to maintain this image of purity and it prevented her from speaking up about how she was raped as a teen. This shows how the pressure to maintain a certain star image had a detrimental impact on her personal life off-screen.

Demi’s most controversial romance was with actor Wilmer Valderrama who she met as a teen. When she turned 18 they started dating, despite her being 12 years younger than him. They dated on and off for six years, before ending things in 2016.

She criticised the relationship on the Call Her Daddy podcast, saying “If you’re a young girl and you think that it’s sexy or fun to date older men, it’s not OK unless you’re of age.”. The lyrics from the song '29' also target the relationship: “I see you’re quite the collector / Yeah you’re twelve years her elder / Maybe now it doesn’t matter / But I know fucking better.” These admissions that there was an issue with the relationship's age gap further place Lovato as a victim of the Hollywood industry.
