Modeling is a great strategy to use in the classroom, especially ELL students. By modeling it gives students a better understanding and connection to what you are asking for them to do. When introducing new skills, activities or even trying to explain something, modeling the correct procedure will help the students to better understand and connect to the task. Effective modeling should also make the expectation more clear for the students.

Weekly Reflection

Weekly reflections is a great way for teachers to connect with their students as understand the students strengths and weaknesses (pg. 32). The weekly can be simple just a summary of what the student did throughout the whole week. It can also be questions such as what did you like about school this week, what did you not like about school, what’s your favorite food, candy, movie. You can base it around anything that you would like to know about the student or how the student feels. This is a great opportunity to build a relationship with the students, knowing what things they like and finding out what areas they succeed in.

Reading Goals

Setting goals in anythign you want to accomplish will make the goal more achievable, and will help the process of achieving them much easier. By students setting reading goals, it will help them to stay motivated to achieve the goals, as well as hold them accountable of themselves to reach the goals. This strategy is effective because it will help improve the students interest in reading while also increasing the students literacy skills at the same time. This strategy is also good to use to help students who don't like to read, because it will motivate them to reach the goals they chose for themselves. Also another important information is thats students must find something that they want to read or they would like to read. (pg.165)

Problem All Around Quickwrites

A good strategy to use to activate studnts prior knowledge is to connect with their own personal prior knowledge. This strategy will have students think about a problem in their lives, community or in the world. They will then be asked to sketch each problem, write a few sentences about each problem and share with a partner. This will help with the students immediate connection between problem-solution in their daily lives. This also helps connect to their own personal life. (pg.217)

Analyzing Images

Analyzing Images is a great strategy to use to incorporate many different skills that students use. Skills such as observation, knowledge, interpretation, and questioning will be used during this strategy. How this strategy will be done is, students will be given an image and they will have to observe, describe what they see; use their knowledge, what do they know about it; interpret, describe what they think is happening in the picture. (pg.293)

Current Events

Current events is a good strategy to use to incorporate what is going on in your local community, in the country, or in the world. While discussing the current events, something to have them answer or find out more abut the event is for them to answer the who, what, when, where, and why of the event. Also, to help them think a little harder, you can have a discussion about what they will think happen in the future with the current event. Current events help to keep students engaged in the real world around them. (pg. 295)

Activities Using Visuals

This strategy of using visuals with activities can lead to a better understanding for some students. Some students are visual learners where they like to hold, touch, or see objects when they are learning about them. Visually seeing an object in person compared to a visual on a paper, the studnts will connect with the visual and understand the real life object. This can be used in any subject such as science, math, and art. (pg.308)

Chants and Songs

By using the strategy of chants and songs, this could be a good opportunity for english language learners to build their vocabulary as well as become more familiar with the English structure. Many of chants or songs can tie into units of study or thematic units. This could also help with ELL to strengthen their reading fluency and prosody.

Set Clear Expectations

Setting clear expectations for the students will set them up for success in what they do, and it starts with us as teachers. The students look up to the teachers and as teacher, we have expectations and standards for ourself, and if the students see that we are following our expectations and standards, they are more than likely to also follow the expectations. At the beginning of the year the students should be told all the expectations that they will need to follow in the classroom. This will help they in becoming routine. When a student doesn't meet a certain expectation, make it clear to them that there is a consequence Also tell them why there are expectations, it is for the better of them and their classmates. (pg.362)

Keep It Engaged

It is very important that we make lesson that are engaging for our students. It is crazy how much more they will pay attentions and will be eager to learn if it is something that they are interested in. It's just like reading a book or doing something in your free time. If you don't find enjoyment in doing something you aren't going to want to do it. The best way to find out what is engaging for the students is to ask the. Find what they like to do, or what ways they like to learn in. (pg.366)
