Therefore, they went for the 'carrot' instead of fighting. This had eventually ended the war because the Vietnamese were being granted freedom, as long as they had stopped fighting. 

* The Carrot and Stick is a metaphor. A great example of this is a mule having to pull a cart. The owner holds a carrot out in front of the mule and the owner also has a stick behind it.
