 In 2016, the unadjusted gender pay gap stood at just over 16% in the European Union (EU). In other words, women earned on average 84 cents for every euro a man makes per hour. Across Member States, the gender pay gap in 2016 ranged from just over 5% in Romania and Italy, to more than 25% in Estonia, followed by the Czech Republic and Germany (both almost 22%).

Her areas of interest are the relationships between environment and public health, science and knowledges and democracy and citizenship. Currently, she is Member of the European Parliament, elected in 2009, where she is part of the Industry, Research and Energy Committte (ITRE) and Economic and Financial Affairs Committee (ECON). She is also Vice-President of the Delegation for the elations with Mashreq countries. Between 2009 and 2012 she was member of the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committe (ENVI).

The anthem symbolises not only the European Union but also Europe in a wider sense. The poem "Ode to Joy" expresses Schiller's idealistic vision of the human race becoming brothers - a vision Beethoven shared.
In 1972, the Council of Europe adopted Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" theme as its anthem. In 1985, it was adopted by EU leaders as the official anthem of the European Union. There are no words to the anthem; it consists of music only. In the universal language of music, this anthem expresses the European ideals of freedom, peace and solidarity.
