My name is Gessylene. It's not a common name here in Brazil and it is a little difficult to pronounce. But my friends call me Gessy.

I don't like my name because people don't know how to write it, so i always have to spell it. Also, it is a very long name.

My mom chose this name because it is a tradition in our family to name girls with names starting with the letter "g": my grandmother's name was Geci, my mother's name is Gésica, and i am Gessylene. Although it is a family custom, i will break this tradition because if one day i have a daughter, i want to name her Sophie. it's a simpler and shorter name, and she won't have to spell it every time she meets someone.

Thoughts on linguistic issues

Language is a resource which humans use to share information, feelings and ideas, whether through speech, signs or writing. As Cook (2010) explains, “language is at heart of human life”, as well as being a "natural phenomenon beyond conscious control" (COOK, 2010, p. 3).
On other hand, literacy is the process of learning to write and read, and is a development of basic human cognitive skills. Moreover, this process contributes not only to social activities but also helps in the interpretation of texts and critical reflection.
Although literacy is also a way of working on social and textual understanding, there are linguistic issues that affect our society in our days. To clarify this idea, there are certain differences between the written language idealized in grammar, and there is the language that is experienced in the real world. For example, we may encounter issues related to the use of ambiguity, sarcasm, humor, and even interpretation in our daily lives that may generate a meaning effect different from what we expect. In this way, applied linguistics seeks “investigate problems in the world in which language is implicated - both educational and social problems” (COOK, 2010, p. 5)

In 2020, my aunt and my sister-in-law were pregnant. There were high expectations for the birth of the babies in the family as the two were pregnant together by coincidence. My sister-in-law would go into labor in March 2021, while my aunt would have the baby in early April. In March, my nephew took a long time to be born and passed the expected 40 weeks. For this reason, a c-section had to be scheduled. Thus, on the 26th my brother called to say that his baby would be born the next day and asked to inform the family members. Then I decided to call my aunt to give her the news that my nephew would be born the next day. As I was calling her, I heard a noise of cars and traffic. I asked her where she was, and she replied that her water broke and she was on her way to the hospital to have her baby. End of story: my cousin was born at 1 am on March 27, and my nephew was born at 9 am on the same day! It was an amazing experience, and the family calls the boys twin brothers from different mothers. There is also a rumor that Davi, my brother and sister-in-law's son, made sure to wait for my cousin Manoel to be born on the same day.

What is art?

Art is a way of expressing and positioning yourself in the world. Producing art is to externalize or materialize our ideas, emotions, culture, and identity. We can observe art in sculptures, paintings, music, poems and movies, as well as other artistic manifestations. However, art not only serves for aesthetic pleasure, it also serves to question our society, stimulate thoughts, and subvert conservative ideals. In this way, art is not only artistic beauty, but can also be an instrument to produce criticism and promote more collective awareness of the current sociocultural problems.
Therefore, rap is an example of artistic manifestation, because the songs reflect on the difficulties faced by people who, for the most part, grew up in the suburbs and have lived with racism, elitism, poverty, police violence, exclusion, and other types of discrimination. This musical genre is no more or less important than traditional written poetry, much less superior or more relevant. The meaning of the abbreviation "rap" is precisely 'rhythm and poetry', since rap has reflections that are accompanied with music - one of the elements that differentiate it from written poetry. In this way, rap is a form of resistance and representation of the communities, so it is essential to recognize that this musical genre is art as well as written poetry, specifically because it keeps alive the culture, ideals, and aesthetics of these communities.
Connecting these ideas with Farell and Martin’s article (2009), just as there is no standard of art, there is not only one standard of English. As the authors explain, just as the English language “comprises “a unique cultural pluralism, and a linguistic heterogeneity and diversity” (2009, p.3), art is also multiple and diverse. Thus, if we consider that one art or one type of English language is more relevant than another artistic manifestation or linguistic variation, we will be invalidating multiple sociocultural contexts, which may promote elitism and discrimination. Comparing the two issues, it is for this reason that makes artistic manifestations and different types of English language plural: the diversity of communication, identities and ideas represent varied social groups, their history and cultural contexts.
