Saira states that the splatter is meant to provide visualization of how these never-ending thoughts feel to those with anxiety. She also explains what each color represents to her making the piece more personal just like how different people experience mental health issues in vastly different ways.

Even in the presence of beautiful things such as a sunset, depression looms over constantly for some people and I feel like this piece truly highlights that emotion perfectly.

The piece I have chosen here is by local Houston artist Dominique Silva and his Paper Bag series which depicts his struggles with depression as well as his experience as a black man in America. He states that prior to creating his art he felt very alone in his emotions and was hesitant to speak about it but realized others were feeling the same. I think this is important to highlight the positives that come out of not hiding mental health issues which would be perfect for bringing awareness.

Before viewing this piece I honestly had no idea what the condition was but this piece does a perfect job at describing how it feels in such a simple manner.

The piece shown is Van Lieshout VI’s piece called Mandala of Pills which was created in 2017. I feel like this displays a harsh reality of how exhausting and expensive it can be to deal with mental health, especially if one suffers from multiple disorders. It is also somewhat ironic as Mandalas are usually used to represent inner peace and stability but for some they will never reach this peace, constantly having the looming feeling of countless medications over them.

It allows us to see how life can be for those dealing with the condition and how quickly things can change for them when dealing with emotion. In the piece you can see the person saying the same exact thing twice but they mean something so much different. This piece does an amazing job of showing people how life with bipolar depression can be at times.
