The U.S bought the Louisiana territory from Napoleon Bonaparte for 15 million dollars in 1803. The land was half of the United States back then. Land was very valuable back then. It was the key to jobs, money, and living. The United States wanted the New Orleans. Unfortunately, it was owned by France, so President Thomas Jefferson sent Robert Livingston to go to France and influence Napoleon, the leader of France to sell the land. After his refusal, Jefferson sent James Monroe, the future fifth president to go to France. Napoleon agreed to sell the land, but he did more. He offered to sell all of the Louisiana territory!

After the United States bought the Louisiana territory. President Thomas Jefferson told Meriwether Lewis, his personal secretary, to go explore it. He told Lewis to keep a journal of the plants and animals he saw, to draw maps of areas, and to search for a water route. After Jefferson asked Lewis to go explore the west, Lewis asked Jefferson if William Clark, his commander in the army could join the trip. Thomas Jefferson agreed. They called themselves the Corps of Discovery (KOR), the people in the group were Lewis, Clark, and about 38 other men. On May 14, 1804, the expedition begun.

Lewis and Clark headed down the Ohio river to the Mississippi river then turned northwest to the Missouri river. It was tough because they had no accurate maps, had to cross over tough land, and had to travel by foot, boat, and horseback. Once they had to start rowing because of a very hard current. They brought food, muskets, knives, a compass, and also Lewis's dog, Seaman. During the winter of 1804-1805, they built a fort near Mandan and Hidatsa. They met a French man named Toussaint Charbonneau and a lady named Sacagawea. They hired Charbonneau as a trapper, and since Charbonneau was her husband, Sacagawea decided to join them with her baby. She was a helpful addition to the expedition because she could speak Shoshone. In the spring of 1804, they had accomplished going through Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa. On August 2, they met the members of the Missouri and Oto tribe. On October 1804, the met the Mandan and Hidatsa tribe. Since Sacagawea knew how to speak Shoshone, she spoke to them about lending the KOR some horses. She actually found out that the leader of the tribe, Cameahwait was her brother! After that, Sacagawea and her husband went with them across the Pacific ocean suggested a spot to spend the winter. Then, she and her husband went back to their home.
