The benefit of buying is that you equipment is to yours to use no matter what, a downside to this is that if the equipment is broken you should make sure that you have insurance, this could cost quite a lot of money.
Equipment that may be needed is:
Camera
Microphones 
Software Systems, premier pro etc
Computer/Laptop 
Knowledge of what you are specifically doing 
If you are a freelancer then you will have to supply what the employer wants or try and find another way. It is also you job as a freelancer to be able to find a way around and come up with a solution to the problem. It will also be a lot harder to make future contacts within the industry which will also help you out a lot. 

You have to be adaptable as a person so you can get around difficult situations and always be able to come up with a solution to help you in the industry. In addition If you are not adaptable then it is harder to make a name for yourself out there in the industry because people will think you are unreliable and no one will want to work with you. 

A free lancer means that you are your own business therefore you will have to learn how to cater for yourself and not rely on other people. Therefore you need to know the trade of business, for example if you had a client and needed to do a job for you'd have to learn to negotiated and also know what you're doing.
