So far we have learned about our main characters, Stan and Charmaine, who are living out of their car due to an all out economic crash caused by an unknown reason. Society is in chaos as the majority of the population is left unemployed and without a home. Many have been forced to a life of crime as that is the only way to be able to buy food and survive, but Charmaine is lucky enough to have a job at a bar. Stan unfortunately is "overqualified" for most jobs and is unemployed at the moment. We are introduced to minor characters such as Charmaine's Grandma Win and Stan's brother Connor. We are led to believe that Grandma Win, unfortunately, passed before the crash, but Connor on the other hand owes Stan money since he is portrayed as the typical asshole younger brother. The only thing keeping Stan and Charmaine safe from the outside world is their car, but without a steady source of income, the lack of gas means they might ditch the car. At the end of this section, we see Stan going to meet up with Connor years after cutting him off in his life.

The story starts with a description of the Main Characters' (MCs) situation, as well as their thoughts. It describes their current life by listing the problems and their thoughts about them: They've lost their house and jobs and sleep on their car, Charmaine is optimistic about their situation but Stan thinks of himself as a failure.

The narration of the story progresses steadily, allowing the reader to relate to the MCs' thoughts and feelings, but the plot is the opposite. The plot starts with th MCs right in the middle of their problems, instead of with a series of events that lead to those problems. This affects the reader perspective into seeing the MCs situation as more overwhelming. It also allows the reader to share the MCs' feelings of not knowing what's happening due to this situation feeling like it happened overnight and news reports not being very helpful.

Summary - Now that Charmaine and Stan live in Positron, they find themselves enjoying the new life that provides them with luxuries they didn't have before. They're given jobs, scooters, assigned colors, and houses that they rotate from when they go back and forth from the prison. One day Stan finds a letter under the fridge from someone named Jasmine to a man named Max, and it led to him being curious about who the people they share the house with really are. According to Stan, they're known as the Alternates and they weren't allowed to know who their Alternates were. Stan begins to have sexual fantasies about Jasmine who he believes is more fierce and sexually wild compared to his wife, Charmaine. What Stan doesn't realize is that Charmaine has been cheating on him with their Alternate Max, and both have been using different names and leaving early in order to see one another when they alternate. Stan's fantasies continue to grow for Jasmine and eventually, he runs into the other Alternate, Jocelyn, who is a higher-up in Positron, and informs him of the cheating both of their partners had committed. Stan learns new secrets about Positron and Charmaine is kept in the prison for a month longer than she's supposed to but isn't informed on why.

Conflict- In this book, the conflict begins with Human vs Self as both Stan and Charmaine constantly fight their inner thoughts and doubts about the poor living conditions they were in. The readers are shown the thoughts and feelings of these two characters and it allows the readers to see how Stan, a sort of pessimist, and Charmaine, an optimist, survive in their car together and try to overcome this obstacle. After discovering Positron, life becomes more pleasant until Stan finds the note. This Human vs Self conflict continues as Stan fights his sexual desires for the sender of the note, Jasmine, and his relationship with Charmaine begins to strain. As we witness the internal struggle of Stan fighting his sexual desires we start to wonder if he will start cheating with Charmaine until we discover that Jasmine is Charmaine. This is when the conflict beings Human vs Human. Once Stan discovers the truth behind Jasmine he becomes furious and hurt that Charmaine had been cheating on him, and it leaves the readers on edge to see what Stan will do once he sees Charmaine after they switch back from the Prison to the house.

Summary - Stan and Charmaine are now in the community, "Consilience," where they serve as inmates for the Positron prison for a month and then live in a normal family neighborhood. They are provided with food, jobs, and shelter but after skepticism and doubt, they both begin to ease into the new lifestyle. Unfortunately, Charmaine decides to cheat on Stan with "Max," the alternate who lives in their house while they stay in the prison for a month. The last thing we learn about the couple is that Stan finds out about this cheating through Jocelyn, the wife of Max, and Charmaine has to stay in the prison for another month.

Analysis - The conflict of the novel quickly turned into Man Vs Self and Man vs Man. Without the conflict from the outside world of the economic collapse, Stan and Charmaine only have to worry about themselves and each other. Unfortunately, mistakes have been made in Charmaine's case due to her cheating on Stan, but she cherishes and "loves" both men for different reasons. The big ideas of these conflicts are love and loyalty. Now that Stan knows about the affair his wife is having, he has yet to bring the hammer onto Charmaine which will cause a Man vs Man conflict. He is fighting himself at the same time because he does not know what he did for Charmaine to cheat on him creating the Man vs Self dynamic. The effect this has on the reader is that it keeps us on our toes of what will happen next because we know that Stan is a ticking time bomb, so we do not know his intentions to do with the information. It keeps the reader theorizing of how he will handle the situation dealt to him and keeps the reader wondering if Charmaine will choose Stan or Max.

Summary - Charmaine is told to stay in the Prison longer than she has to because of complications with identity theft. She believes that she may have been caught in her affairs with Max and starts to panic. While Charmaine is in the Prison, Stan returns to the home and is forced to recreate every moment Charmaine and Max had together that was caught on tape. Jocelyn threatens Stan into these sexual acts as they recite every single word exchanged every day.

Character Contradiction - Charmaine is a character with the most contradiction because of her affair with Max on Stan. When she's with Stan she thinks of Max, and when she's with Max she thinks of Stan. She constantly contradicts her actions with her thoughts as she concludes she loves both Stan and Max while being disloyal the whole time. It shows the readers that Charmaine is someone who is weak-minded and can't get herself in order and cheats on her husband who she was with through thick and thin.

Tough Questions - During her affair with Max, she questions whether she loves Max or not, and whether she loves Stan or not. She believes that there's a chance that she doesn't love Max, and truly loves Stan, but while being intimate with Max is she taken out of her thoughts and tells herself that she is in love with Max in the current moment.

Summary - Charmaine has been informed that she has to stay at the prison due to "identity theft" in their computer systems, but she speculates that they have caught her and Max having an affair, causing her to mentally start to shut down. While she is staying in the prison, Stan has been forced to perform sexual activities with Jocelyn. She forces him to imitate the sessions that Phil/Max and Charmaine have done in the abandoned home with her every day.

Contradiction - (page 110) While having sex with Max, Charmaine says things that she doesn't really mean. In the heat of the moment, she contradicts what she says rather than what she truly feels. During one of the sessions with Max, she answers the questions "Then what does he do? Tell me, show me. And then what do you feel?" with "I'm pretending it's you" (110). But in her mind, she tells herself those statements aren't "true really, but it's what Max likes to hear" (110). These contradicting thoughts reveal that Charmaine does not want to fully commit this act of cheating. Despite actively having an affair, she still cherishes Stan. She is conflicted with choosing either man because she wants them both for different reasons. Each of them has the different traits that she wants in a partner. While both men fulfill her desires, Charmaine is hurting herself with the long-term decision of having to choose between the two.

Question - (page 94) While actively having an affair with Max, Charmaine cannot commit to him. She doubts the choice of cheating on Stan she has made. She asks and answers the questions to herself by saying "Has she been a fool? No question, yes. Has it been worth it? No. Maybe. Yes" (94). These questions she is having with herself highlight the internal conflict she is facing. The doubts show that she has some regrets about her decision to continuously meet with Max. She cannot even give herself a definite answer to these questions. Charmaine is struggling with choosing between Max and Stan because she desires both of them in their own way.

Summary - In the book, "The Heart Goes Last" by Margaret Atwood, after repeatedly having to reenact Charmaine and Stan's sexual scenes, on Valentine's Day Jocelyn reveals the truth to Stan. She tells him that Positron is not what it was initially supposed to be due to greedy investors. She reveals that they kill people and sell their organs to make money and tells Stan that she was Ed's cofounder and she needs Stan's help to bring inside information to the outside. Max's interaction with Charmaine were all planned by Max and Jocelyn and they take Stan to where Charmaine works to be injected and "die" so they can sneak his body out.

Song - The song Happier Than Ever showcases the feelings and emotions of Stan who learns of the betrayal of his wife Charmaine. In the song, lyrics such as "Cause I'd never treat me this shitty, you made me hate this city" captures the feelings of Stan as the new life they found that was supposed to bring them joy only brought misery to Stan after being betrayed and forced to have sex with a woman he doesn't love.
