Opening Minds to STEM Careers by Hélia Salvado

My name is Hélia Salvado, I am a Portuguese teacher of Physics and Chemistry in a secondary school - Colégio de São Miguel, a Catholic school in Fátima. I prepare students from 12 to 18 years old not only with the knowledge of Physics and Chemistry but I also develop soft skills with some science projects. I am interested in working with other European teachers to help our students to get more and more open-minded and socially concerned citizens.

If so, what are the main reasons for that?

On my opinion there's a lack of STEM skilld in Europe as we can read on the doccument the difficulty on finding staff with required skills in EU is 40%. I think this is due the lack of developement of those skills in schools. Schools must follow the technological evolution. Students from XXI century need more modern school and different pedagogical methods!

There are 1287 students, some of them immigrants, other live in foster homes and 195 are in need of Special Education.
Our students' families are mainly low and middle-class ones. We have some students with migrant backgrounds and some students who live in foster homes. Besides many of our students' families don't have very high cultural perspectives, nor do they value education in their children's lives. However we are engaged in offering all our students a set of personalized pedagogical approaches, so that we can fight early school leaving by providing our students with technological courses. In fact, our upper secondary school students can follow different educational paths, such as scientific areas (STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) or technical and professional ones - courses level IV - (Arts, Economics, Social Studies, Sports and New Technologies), to enable them to choose if they want to go into the university or enter the job market.
