The main theme of the poem is that once a person has selected a path, that person will not stray from that path. This is shown by the woman in the poem not choosing a suitor because she has already fallen in love with somebody else.

Rhyme scheme and line arrangement don't contribute to the overall effect of the poem. This is because the rhyme scheme is in no order which doesn't create a negative contribution but doesn't create a positive one either.

Literary Focus - Literary Analysis Question 5

In "The Soul selects her own Society," do you think the phrase "Valves of her attention" is derived from organic things (valves of the heart) or mechanical ones (valves of a faucet)? Why?

The phrase "Valves of her attention" is probably derived from the valves of a heart. First of all, the poem talks about how the lady is unmoved by the people that come to her and how she has no feelings for them. This shows more of her feelings and can relate to the heart. Also, the poem talks a lot about how her soul selects her society and decides what will be set for her, and souls are more related to being in the heart and body.
