Mrs. Pattison is super approachable and always gives you time to work in class to avoid having to do work over the weekend. Use that time wisely and take advantage of it. But Mrs. Pattison is always super understadning and realizes that sometimes things just pile up so if you think you won't be able to reach deadlines don't be afraid to go up and talk to her about it. Mrs. Pattison has made English a class I actually enjoy going to which is a rare occasion. I hope you guys enjoy her class as much as I did this past year and good luck!

- Don't wait until the night before to do assignments
- Pay attention in class
- Do your work so you can participate in class and wont look dumb when she calls on you and you can't answer
- Ask questions (she won't yell at you, or look at you weirdly)
- Cherish your time in this class because it will be over before you know it
- The "answer the question, provide a quote, explain how the quote is related or whatever" its really annoying in the beginning, but you will get used to it and for me it just became a habit because you will realize without that way of answering you really don't answer the question
- Follow the directions
- WRITE IN COMPLETE SENTENCES (thats the dumbest thing you can lose a point for)
- The class can be easy if you make it easy what I mean by that is as long as you don't save your work for the night before, pay attention in class, and do everything she says for you to do, you will be perfectly fine so if you decide to constantly save your work for the night before, play on your phone during class and not listen to anything , and develop the attitude "Its ok if I miss JUST ONE assignment" then its all on you. You did this to yourself and it honestly sucks to suck

This class is so fast paced, much faster than your other classes. If you miss a day of english you've already missed like 6 things. Which is good and efficient for those who show up but if you happen to have an appointment while english is happening, be prepared to do a quiz or homework assignment. She is malleable with her schedule and work, so don't stress! But let her know beforehand if you will be missing class so that she can let you know what to prepare for. Try not to miss anything from this class, if you miss a day you just missed 3 episodes out of the season of whatever series this is. It's a lot.

Yes, she goes really fast but if you pay attention and follow along you wont be lost and she usually goes over the correct answers to things in class so that's a easy 100 on an assignment
- When you miss a day of school/ her class, look at the DOH. That document literally SAVES LIVES! That way you are not totally out of the loop and it leads you on the right direction on what you need to get done and what you need to show her.
- Always try to answer her questions, she will never tell you that it is wrong but she will lead you on teh right direction
- When writing a thesis, check your ideas with Mrs. Pattison, she will lead you on the right path and help you find better words on what you are trying to say
- Read everything she gives you whether it be a book or an article.
- Keep an open mind. You learn new things that you didn't know happened in her class and they usually help you to understand other things more.
- if you participate, she acknowledges that you are trying your hardest and will know that you care
- Don't be afraid to ask her advice on anything whether it be a problem that you found yourself in or an idea you have
Overall, Mrs. Pattison is a great teacher but there is just so much that she can do. The absolute worst thing you could do in this class is to not pay attention during class. If you pay attention, follow along, and do a little bit of work every day, then you will be highly successful in your english class. Going off of this point, do not let yourself fall behind on your classwork/homework because you'll be fighting an uphill battle for the rest of the grading period. Pay attention and do your work! It will pay off.

It was helpful for me to do the reading questions right away, and you don't even have to "read". Listen to audio books on youtube, it made life so much easier. If you're going to procrastinate on something, do it for studying vocab, it's actually really easy to study right before and still get a good grade. Do your best to balance this class well, it will help you be less stressed in other classes.

Another important thing is to actually read and annotate because that makes everything much easier.

I am a huge procrastinator. There has never been a class I haven't procrastinated in. This class changed that. Even if you can't understand the book, Sparknote it or start an audio book. Something is always better than nothing. Assignments pile and layer up on each other. Unless you can pull multiple all nighters (which suck btw), DO YOUR STUFF ON TIME. The AP exam arrives faster than expected and it helps to understand multiple different genres of material. The answer with a quote, then explain is annoying BUT it helps A LOT to understand what's happening and gives you a lot more material you can write about. Complaining about the work does nothing to help get it done faster. Just pay attention in class ( make notes if need be), try your best to keep up, and if you're not gonna read the books at least get the main points of each chapter.

Actually read because the reading quizzes are hard (wuthering heights) and just skimming through sparknotes or lit charts 5 minutes before class starts doesn't help (you'll fail the quiz). Overall, if you actually don't procrastinate then you'll be fine. Don't complain about all the work, you have a study hall and plenty of time to do the stuff.

The number one piece of advice I can give is to do your work as soon as it's assigned. Some assignments can take longer than you originally anticipated which can throw off your entire work schedule. Do yourself a favor and just get it over with. It's ok if you have no idea what you're reading, just get it done and read sparknotes after. I know it seems like extra work if you could just read sparknotes to begin with, but it will help you so much in the long run. Don't freak out if you bomb a quiz. You will have plenty of opportunities to bring your grade back up. Homework and classwork grades are easy 100's as long as you actually complete them to the best of your ability. Don't be afraid to ask for help if your confused. Finally, don't doubt your own abilities. AP Lit is an extremely demanding course. It is among the most difficult AP courses you will ever take. You wouldn't be sitting here in this classroom if you couldn't handle it. You are here because you worked hard and your previous instructors believed that you could be successful. Thriving in this course is stretch for even the most gifted and dedicated of students if they are unprepared. Thriving is difficult, but never impossible. Pay attention in class, do your work, read the book, and ask questions. Remember- you got this :)

It's a lot more reading, but as long as you vaguely understand what's going on in the book, you'll go more in depth with it in class and feel a lot better about it.

1. Read and annotate the books well!!! You will need quotes for evidence and it's better to spend the time understanding it so you are prepared for questions/class/tests. It's completely worth the struggle. Also, use sparknotes/cliffnotes **in addition to** reading to learn analysis/themes so you can contribute in class and apply it to your own understanding.
2. Use a planner!!!! Honestly the main reason I find success is because I have a planner that I put everything in... homework, sports games, appointments, meetings, etc. Staying organized makes the world of a difference.
3. Appreciate the things you learn from this class that can be used for all classes and in the future - such as how to cite sources, structure essays, elevate vocabulary etc.
4. Also, if you ask Mrs. Pattison if your theme or thesis is workable, she will tell you and help you fix it if needed. Just go to her for help.

Something I've learned this year is how far respect goes. In your senior year, you're going to have to ask for a letter of recommendation, work extensions, help with an assignment, etc. So being nice and respectful to a teacher will take you a long way. Don't try to be the funny guy in class and annoy the teacher. Regardless of how frustrated or mad a teacher may make you, always try to be polite because you will never know when you may need something or help.

1. Do not be afraid to ask questions, especially for help or extensions. You will most likely need them, but you won't get any if you don't ask.
2. Pay attention in class during book readings and try to read at home when assigned. Mrs. Pattison will call on you randomly and ask you a question about the book, and she assigns reading quizzes with somewhat complex questions.
3. If you get asked a question and you don't think you know the answer, just wing it and come up with your best answer. Mrs. Pattison is not the type of teacher to leave you there embarrassed; she will help you out and elaborate on almost any answer you give.
4. There is a LOT of work in this class, but try to get it out of the way during class or in your study halls. Getting all the excessive writing done in school is a lot less stressful than going home and remembering you still have to do some reading questions with a quote for each answer.

If you put in effort into this class you will get an A. If you don't, you will struggle. Even if english is not your strong suit, you will be okay IF YOU DO YOUR WORK. She has assignments that she will not take for a grade but she says you will use in the future (midterm for example). Do it. Even if it is not for a grade it will save you a lot of time. If you're struggling, ask her for help. It takes a solid 5 minutes max to go to her in between classes and ask for help (especially on essays). And don't complain.. nobody wants to hear it and it won't change anything... shes still going to assign you reading even if you complain.

When you do your reading underline quotes because once you finish the book you're not actually done... you're going to have to go back write an essay, do a project, or something and you will ALWAYS need quotes.

All of her tests on her books are based on the questions you do as you read. She goes over them in class so pay attention because shes giving you tests answers basically.

The most important thing to know about senior english is that even though the work is not very hard there is a lot of it. You need to be prepared to take about 30 minutes every day to complete your work. It will not challenge you but if you are not keeping up with it, it will pile up fast. If you aren't doing your work that does not mean she will stop assigning more of it. All you need to do is just do your assigned homework and actively participate in class and the course will not be difficult whatsoever. I know it will be hard to keep up with the work. But it will be super rewarding when you go to take the test and you realize that you already know everything and you barely needed to study. Also the exams for this class are literally just SATs so get the grumbling out now about that. - Will P.

Even when you are exhausted, you have to put effort into the class.

You don't need to study that hard for vocab. Completing a Quizlet the night before typically gets me a 23/25. Don't worry about analogies, those are a lost cause and no one ever gets them all right on purpose. Just speed through the quizlet one more time right before the quiz and this will always work. Trying to study from the vocab book itself is a waste of time, it doesn't work and takes too long. I'm sure if you did all of the chapter questions in one sitting they'd probably help but they aren't necessary for this strategy. You still need to do these for a grade, however.

I think this class was definitely a change especially from coming from and AP and Honors English background. There was a lot of work, but it was definitely do-able. In the beginning it was very hard with a lot of reading assignments but it got easier. I think once you hit the 2nd semester most of the work load is expected and it gets easier. But really though, do not put off her work. It will pile up bad and fast. Keep on it when you can :)

Read the books, you have to...you will not do good unless you read the books. I loved this class, but I'm serious when I say read the books. You can come to class without reading, get a fairly good grade on the Reading Check Quiz, but that isn't going to do you any good for the tests, later on. It's not that hard to sit down and read...or even just listen to audiobook for 30 minutes to an hour, especially with block schedule where you can split your reading time up into two nights and get it done.

I promise you Mrs. Pattison does not bite and is willing to help you. As someone who has never taken an AP class before and my friends taking AP Lang, trust me we were all uncomfortable. You are working a new muscle and if you keep persevering through, it will get better! There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

There's a lot to unpack with this class. It certainly isn't an easy A+, so don't treat it like that. This class will work you, hard. It'll grind you down to the bone. This class demands not just your blood, sweat, and tears, it also demands your will to keep going. You will fall down, you will get tripped up, this class is like a cobblestone road, it's not easy to walk on. Real strength isn't shown in enduring the pain of walking forward. Real strength is knowing where to step, so you don't twist your foot on the rocks. Humanity has never solved a problem using only brute force, we have always used intuition to solve problems. The same applies to this class, no matter how many hours you pour into your work, you won't ever finish if you don't know what you're doing.

My advice is to find ways around doing things the hardest way. There are so many assignments that feel mundane, like reading complicated books and citing quotes / filling out charts so I suggest listening to audiobooks or reading summaries to get a basic understanding for things. Also, use vocab as a grade booster because it's easy if you study for like 2 minutes before a quiz. The last thing I'll say is use your study halls to get your homework done right after its assigned because you will get to a point in the year when you will not want to do anything school-related once you get home. Good luck!
- Jena Lawlor

To be honest, I'm not good at focusing on long sentences or long chapters of any books or novels. Pro tip that helped me this year is to listen to audio book. I realized how easy it was for me to focus when Mrs. Pattison read the page out loud in class. Any analyzing sources online can come in hand to give you a grab of what's going on in the book. You're entering your senior year, so keep in mind that it can be frustrating to keep up with everything at the same time. Write things down when they come to your mind. Index cards, sticky notes can be very helpful as reminders too. Set those on your desk to remind you of your tasks. Lastly, good luck with your study!!! You can both enjoy and focus, trust me!!

You will feel like you are able to finish her assignments the day it's due because you were able to manage that for the first few weeks of school but it won't work out for the entire school year. The best way to complete her assignments is to work on them slowly, think about what you have to say. You won't find it the class as hard if you don't have to stress about the work at the last minute. Finally, if you need help with your work, reach out to her. Give yourself ample time to work on each assignment and give your best effort. If you find yourself getting behind, just talk to Mrs. Pattison, she is one of the easiest teachers to talk to and she is very understanding. Also, just read the books. Trying to google through every assignment is harder and takes more time than just reading. The test will reflect how much you read so if you want a good grade then READ!! (:

Turn in all your assignments, read all the poems/short stories/chapters, watch all the videos, and pay attention in class!! And if you have one bad grade, don't give up, there will be PLENTY of grades to cover it up, trust me. For my AP Lit kids out there, TAKE THE MOCK EXAM. You don't have to do perfect, but it'll help you gauge where you are! And for my English kids on the fence for AP Lit: take the class. It may seem daunting, but it's doable, and at the end of the year you'll be glad you took it. Don't be afraid to speak up in class, either during lessons or during the talks. Be respectful, try your best, take a deep breath, and talk to Mrs. Pattison if you need help, she's very nice and super understanding! Good luck!!
-Phebe Gentlesk

Yeah, your grade will be bad if you dont turn in your homework, however, it will be an A if you turn in everything on time. The class is based on a point system and you can essentially game the system by cushoining your grade through homework and classwork so that if you abosolutely bomb a unit test you will be fine.

Free grades:
Homework
Classwork
Vocab
Projects

Hard Grades:
Unit Tests
Reading Quizzes
Papers

By just doing the free assignments and essentially doing your best on the hard assignments you can get an -A at least.

That being said, it's very easy to procrastinate and fall behind on numerous assignments, so don't be stupid. She really makes her class fun and goes out of her way to take care of her students; she buys us candy for our birthdays, she gives us coffee, and she's ridiculously understanding and compassionate in terms of knowing how to pace the course and what we can really handle. But as a senior in high school it should be normal to ask your teacher about class, to look over parts of your essays, and for help with any topics you don't understand. On each essay we wrote I had Mrs. Pattison look over my first paragraph to see if I was headed in the right direction. She proved to be a very helpful resource on many assignments. Also, writing the essays is soooooo much easier if you do it in class and you actually read the books.

Granted not to say this class is impossible. Rather the opposite, honestly the hardest part about this class is just keeping up with work. If you manage to keep up with the work (For the most part) then you honestly have a rather good class. With some intellectually stimulating conversations. There are also some rather good books. Honestly I enjoyed what I read of Heart of Darkness, granted that's probably because I like Modernist literature. But overall just keep up with work.
- William Schuele

Pay attention throughout the year to Mrs. Pattison's advice. She knows how to do AP Lit better than you, so just trust her. TRUST THE PROCESS. Even if you feel like you don't understand, things will click, and you know more than you think. You will be over prepared for the exam if you put in the work throughout the year, read the books, and do at least some of the MANY practices that she posts. With that said, the work can easily pile up if you don't keep up, so try not to fall behind (and if you do try to catch up quickly or else the work just will never get done). Also, just scrub clean the writing style you learned in AP Lang if you took that class, because it is NOT the formula you want in Lit, and it will box you in. Just chill out and enjoy the books and then you won't have to stress so hard before the exam.

Don't take a moment for granted. Once you're done with freshman year, you're 1/4 through. Sophomore year goes even faster, and junior year just feels long in general. Senior year when you realize you're almost done, it is not too late to have fun and to leave your mark. It is never too late to join a team. It is not too late to make good with old friends or enemies. Be who you want to be. Work hard, play harder. High school is supposed to be hard. At the end of the day, high school only lasts 4 years (in most cases), and then it's gone. These are some of the days you will remember forever, good or bad. Bring a film camera along the ride!

I've taken the hard way to discredit the easy way, searching for the ability to correct those who were simply preaching the truth. Take the easy road, do your work and study your vocab. An extra minute spent on reviewing your essay or simply resiting your vocab meaning will help you in the end. The only thing the long road has to offer is a flat tire and an empty gas tank. Go ahead, take the hard road, but when I see you on the side waving for your help I'll chuckle with wisdom. Unfortunately, I can only warn you of the dangers ahead if you choose trouble. It's important to remember, the honey badger doesn't give a (insert bad s word for poop), but once he runs out of food; honey badger is panicked. Good luck!

You can get 100's on vocab. You have all the answers. Use that to your advantage and sweat on those vocab tests and quizzes, and it'll balance everything out. Also at the end of the year before the exam you'll get this massive 'choice board' review, actually do it. I did it the night before and only really tried on half of it, and it helped way more than anything else. also last thing, if ur struggling on something, she GIVES you optional practice. Don't just complain that you don't get poetry, try doing more practice and look at the explanations for the answers. You'll never understand poetry, just understand what they want you to answer.

English 4 and English 3 are extremely similar courses. However, because of senioritis you will feel like the work we get in English 4 is piling on top of each other fast. It is important to remember that there has always been a lot of work for students, ESPECIALLY in English. You will probably fall behind, but what I did was make a checklist of missing work and made sure to check it all off before the quarter ended. Of course you do not want to have missing assignments in the first place, but senior year feels like missing work is inevitable for even the hardest working of students. Google classrooms for english should also be checked very frequently. One day you are walking her class and then all the sudden everybody is freaking out about a vocab quiz that no one knew we had that day. Mrs. Pattinson usually does tell us when we have a quiz in the next class, but trust me you will always forget. The quizzes are always posted on Google classrooms so that is why it is important to check as much as you can. Lastly, you must read the books we are assigned in class, we do get assigned pop quizzes and we do have in class discussion questions about them too, so if you are not prepared 9/10 you will not do well. Most importantly, do not be afraid of her class! It is very fun and she genuinely cares about her students. Mrs. Pattinson is always free to answer any questions about any materials, she loves to help. Good luck senior year!

Edit answer

See classmate answers

Reply

No time for fun intros lets get right to it. Your first semester is gonna suck. You are going to get failing grades and you are going to want to quit but don't. Trust me when I say the grades will balance out and you will get the grade you hope for, it's just going to take some time and effort. Furthermore, this is big kid AP and turning your work in late isn't going to fly. You are going to have to do the work even when you'd "prefer not to". No matter how dark it seems to get you have to preserver and keep chugging along. If you stay up to date, participate, and ask questions you are going to be just fine. More than that you are going to succeed. Mrs. Pattinson has your best interest at heart. She will never shut down and idea and wants to hear you all out so place your trust in her. Finally, if you were in AP Lang GET OUT OF THAT MENTAL HEADSPACE NOW. It doesn't matter anymore and the faster you transition to AP Lit brain the better you will be. Best of luck and see you on the other side!!!

-Kenna O'Brien

A classroom is one of the best places to grow in mental strength, but a senior year classroom, unlike other classrooms, is a unique place to mature. The work is significantly harder when you're on a time crunch, I promise you. Read the book pages she assigns the night she assigns it, because it adds up really fast and the reading checks are no joke, especially if you have no clue what happened in the book. Vocab is a freebie so make sure to do good on those because they help your grade sooooo much. This class is really fun though, don't let it scare you!

The senioritus may be extremely difficult to push through but you will have to do all the work at some point so just get it done when it is assigned to you. English 4 was definitely a very useful class so make sure you pay attention to everything even the little assignments. Mrs. Pattison will provide you with all the resources and assignments you will need to be successful in her class so make sure you keep them. The resources she gives you will improve your performance on tests and exams that involve reading analysis. She is a very amazing teacher and will help you grow in more aspects of your life than just English. Sincerely, Casey Guerrant

Also, if you pay attention in class it won't be as hard to study for tests and quizzes in the future. Vocab quizzes and tests are also free grades, so try your best on those!

For all the seniors it is going to be hard at the beginning of the year to balance college applications and AP courses. At the beginning of the year make sure you have a schedule. AP Lit is drastically different than AP Lang for the format of essays and analysis of passages. For AP Lit specifically, read the books (or at least use SparkNotes and really listen when Mrs. Pattinson goes over the chapters) and try not to procrastinate. if at the end of the year you fall into a slump with your work in English it will be ok to turn things in late (plus she doesn't mark off points). For essays make sure you really focus on learning the skills to make a good thesis, they will be crucial on the exam. Don't stress to much and make sure to have fun!

- Jadyn N.

English 4 will be a breeze compared to English 3! So don't worry you've got this. Read the books assigned to you and get started on your essay's as soon as they are assigned to you. The main piece of advice is do not procrastinate on your essay, take like 30 minutes a day/every other day and get it done. Do not stay up really late the night it is due and rush to get it done!

Just be nice and avoid disrespect, it will take you far.

You're going to get senioritis... and you're maybe going to fall behind.... do not let yourself fall anymore than one class behind because you will regret it so much and feel super stressed, not to mention it hurts your grade. Ask for extensions when you really need them, but otherwise try to use your study halls to stay on track!!!!

AP Lang is a lot of looking for rhetorical devices and then trying to tie it into some universal theme. I feel as though lit is the opposite. I normally try and start by looking for a central complexity (like a contradiction or reversal) that contributes to a theme, and then in the process of writing an essay about it you cover the author's strategies without ever needing to mention them by name

TURN IN YOUR ASSIGNMENTS!! There are a lot and they add up quickly, but if you stay on top of it you’ll be fine. Focus on the albert’s as those are a bigger part of your grade than you may think, and a 20 on an albert tanks your grade hard. Good luck, you’ll do great!
