Iron Act (1750)

1750
A trade and navigation act that the British Parliament passed that encouraged colonies to produce raw iron, while also limiting iron MANUFACTURING in the colonies. Limiting manufacturing of iron in the colonies would mean that they could not profit off of making iron products, only making money through selling England raw iron. England would also buy raw iron from the colonies for cheaper than they would sell the products back to the colonies. This limits self-rule in the colonies, since the British are setting rules, and are charging more for the product than they are buying the raw material.

April 18, 1689
Boston rebels overthrew their governor, Edmund Andros. The cause for the revolt was opposition to series of British acts that increased revenues on a variety of items for the British, which meant less revenue for the colonists who were selling such materials. This revolt showed that the colonists' self-rule was very significant, showing that they could get together to combat against the British.

1651
The Navigation Acts were a series of acts passed by Parliament to strictly keep trade between the colonies and England. Restricting trade between colonies and England would mean that the colonies could not trade to other countries, and could only trade through English ships, or colonial ships. This gives the colonies very little self-rule, isolating trade would mean that the colonies have no other option but to buy and trade with the English.

It was the first democratically-elected governing body in the colonies. This is a great level of self-rule, the colonists actually assembling to organize a self governing body.

1686
Founded in 1686, the Dominion of New England combined New York, New Jersey, and various New England area colonies into one big colony. The Dominion of New England was under royal control, with assigned governor Edmund Andros. This would make it easier for the King to control the colony in his favor. This is not good for self-rule, as the merging of these colonies would mean the colonists had no choice.

It was an agreement made by all the settlers onboard to follow government rules when they established the Plymouth colony. It was also the first constitution created in the New World, which makes it very high up on the self-rule scale because it sets the boundaries for self governing and rules apart from the English.

1721
Salutary neglect was an unofficial policy, meaning the English did not write this down in legal terms, and was begun by the Prime Minister at the time, Robert Walpole. He believed that if the colonies were left untouched by British restrictions, then they would flourish. In other words colonists were allowed to ignore and dodge English laws as long as the colonies stayed loyal to England. This allows a lot of self-rule for the colonists since they were allowed to just do whatever, not under any English restrictions.

It is the first constitution in the colonies that served as a model of future constitutions from other colonies. The self-rule of this document is very high, as it established a model constitution, and created a form of non-English government in the colony of Connecticut.

1733
The Molasses act was an act passed from the British parliament which put taxes on molasses, sugar, and rum. This only applied to those specific imports that were coming from countries that weren't English. For example, if the Dutch imported sugar into the colonies, the taxes would be applied.
The self-rule in this event is very low, since it limits trade with foreign countries, and is aiming to strictly keep trade between the colonies and the English.

1699
The Wool Act was an extremely limiting act which restricted the export of wool, or any wool like fabrics. This act not only restricted exports of wool outside the colonies to other countries, but even from one colony to another. Wool was to be kept in the colony it was originally in. This is extremely low in self-rule because it doesn't even allow the colonies to trade wool between one another.

The colonists definitely had self-rule during the colonial period. Though only at certain points within the period, the colonists created their own colonial governments, and constitutions. Events that prove this include the formation of the House of Burgesses in 1619, the Mayflower Compact being adapted in 1620, the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut being adapted in 1639. These few examples show that the colonists were willing to combat the British government and begin creating a form of government in the colonies where the British wouldn't have control.
