This curricular module is based on a lesson that my high school beginner level EL students have been working on for the past few weeks. Learning how to make verbs in the past tense is important for any EL, but the numerous irregular past tense verbs that exist in the English language present a special learning challenge. This unit will use many different activities to help them memorize and use these words in their speech, reading, and writing.

Day 1 will be an introduction to the new words I would like the students to be familiar with in this unit. These beginner ELs will already be familiar with many verbs, but need to memorize their past tense form. To introduce them to this, I have a kahoot where they will see a picture of a verb and choose the correct multiple choice answer showing that verb conjugated in the present and past tense. After playing this kahoot, I will have them to a Quizlet live with a similar activity, but this time there is no present tense conjugation of the verb.
As a final activity for the day, I will let them know that they will be using these new words to create an Adobe Spark video of their first day in an American school, and I will show them a personal account of my own first day of high school to model for them.

To review, I will begin the class by giving everyone a bingo card with the new irregular verbs on them in the past tense. I will say the verb in the present tense, and they must correctly match it in the present tense on their card. We will play a few rounds of this.
Then, I will have the students submit questions that they can ask each other about their first day of school in America using the tool "poll everywhere."
Once we have come up with a sufficient number of questions, students will pair up and ask each other these question and respond to them.

The day will start by having students read an article of their choice on Newsela at their reading level. They will highlight regular past tense verbs and irregular past tense verbs in a different color.
After they have read the Newsela article, they will begin creating their adobe spark about their first day of school in America. I will provide each student with a list of the questions we came up with as a class to guide them.
