Costumes/props/settings discussed and evaluated by Beth Sargent

Here I am going to talk about and evaluate my ideas for the costumes of my artists and couple; the settings I want to use in my music video; the various props I may or may not feature; what types of lighting will be required and what camera angles and movements will be used.

The costumes for my video I want to be quite typical and fit
the stereotype, codes and conventions of a country music video. I want my
artist that is portraying Hunter Hayes to be in a typical country outfit, like
a checked shirt with jeans and boots. I feel this would be suitable as
typically this is what country stars wear and one of the most famous photos of
Hayes which is on one of his albums; he is wearing a checked shirt- which is
the typical stereotype of this genre.

For the couple that are in the narrative part of my music
video, I want them to be dressed casually and not too stylised- unlike a pop
video which would normally be heavily stylised. I want this to show that the
couple are comfortable with each other. I want the girl wearing a flowery dress,
as this fits in with the country theme and genre of this video. I want the boy
of the couple to be wearing jeans and just a t-shirt so it isn’t too heavily
stylised as this is quite casual clothing.

My costumes are going to be more natural colours rather than
bright colours as I want them to fit in more with the settings as a country
video would do rather than having them standing out in bright colours as this
could be quite unnatural. I also want my couple in the narrative to be in more
pastel colours.

I want the main setting to be in an opening in a wood or in a field as I think this would fit in with the country/pop genre as it will be in the ‘countryside’. I might also have other settings for the narrative like a swimming pool, if I want them to jump in or other random places like a train track or a house as the song is called ‘I Want Crazy’ so having varied settings will fit in with this title and the genre.

I am going to use quite a few props in my video as the title of the song is ‘I want crazy’ so I want the people in my video to be doing silly things like using water guns and maybe confetti blasters. I am also going to have an armchair in my video, maybe in the middle of a forest, for my artist to sit on whilst singing the song. I am also going to have a guitar as this is typical of a country video to have the instrument in it especially an acoustic guitar. I am going to also use dried leaves to be thrown over my artist whilst he is singing and playing the guitar as I feel this would make it more interesting rather than nothing going on behind and around him. I am also going to have a tripod to use to keep my camera stable whilst doing still shots and so it doesn’t look like an amateur video.

LIGHTING

I want my lighting to be quite natural rather than
exaggerated as I think this is more in the style of the country genre, as if I
used quite synthetic lighting, this would take the emphasis away from the
natural feel of the video. If I film in a woods then I may need synthetic lighting
as the trees will cause shadows and could potentially be quite dark, so will
have to think about the time of day when I want to film. But if I do use
synthetic lighting I am going to try make it as natural as possible.

CAMERA ANGLES

I am going to use a varied amount of camera angles to make
my filming more interesting and to portray different feelings and emotions
within my video. Using a high angle shot to look down on my actors and using a
low angle shot can portray different meanings whilst filming so I will think
about this. I am also going to use movement on my camera, like panning- so it
isn’t all just still shots. When the couple in my narrative are moving or
running I might have the camera following them to give a sense of movement and
energy. My tripod will help keep my camera steady when zooming in and out to my
artists face and guitar, so this doesn’t look shaky and unprofessional.
