Italian history dates back to the Etruscans, an ancient civilization that ruled between the Tiber and Arno rivers. They were replaced in 3rd century BCE by the Romans who soon overthrew all other power in the Mediterranean area. Their empire stretched from India over to Scotland by the time 2nd century CE came about. Struggles with power between religions and military and other leaders caused a scarcely secure empire. This empire collapsed in 5th century CE as a result of a cease of barbarian invasions where Lombards, Huns, Franks, and Ostrogoths seized parts of Italy. The Normans, however, established a self-effacing empire in the southern areas of Sicily and Italy during the 11th century. Italian unification showed up in the 19th century after a liberal revolution situated Victor Emmanuel II as king. Years later, World War I raged about and after a little over four years, Italy, along with the other Allied countries, ended up on the winning side, under control of Benito Mussolini. This caused the Italian party system to undergo an extreme transformation in dealing with the political center, which collapsed. Because of this, a left-right polarization of the party threw the divided north and south into deeper conflict and Silvio Berlusconi rose to power. Beginning in the 20th century, Italy's economy was prosperous in terms of agriculture and tourism. Now, many people visit Italy to learn of its interesting history and to see its unique monuments and buildings such as the Colosseum, Florence Cathedral, the Grand Canal, and more.

Men contribute very little to any of the housework or childcare. The gender roles are very traditional. Women usually tend to the home and family while men work hard. Italian mothers ,unlike mothers from other countries do not leave the labor market even after having a child.

In 1929, Italy was hit hard by the Great Depression. A number of mixed entities were formed, whose purpose was to bring together representatives of the government and of the major businesses. These representatives discussed economic policy and manipulated prices and wages so as to satisfy both the wishes of the government and the wishes of business. This economic model based on a partnership between government and business was soon extended to the political sphere, in what came to be known as corporatism.
