Address Unknown Companion Text - LB

Address Unknown, by Margot Livesey, is a story told between 2 German friends, Max and Martin between letters a couple of years before World War 2. Martin goes back to Germany, and Max stays in San Francisco. As Hitler rises to power, Martin becomes a pungent German Patriot. Max, a Jew in America, is worried and sends Martin his concerns about Hitler. Martin, despite Max's concerns, still stays patriotic and in support of Hitler.

Address Unkown is similar to The Hired Girl because both authors have the main characters continue to do something even though someone has repetitively told them not to, and then when that thing backfires, the character is in trouble. For example, Joan in The Hired Girl fell in love with David, who was one of the boys in the house she cleans. Although lots of people, like Malka the housekeeper, Father Horst, and even her Mother warned her of boys and David. Despite the warnings and begging, Joan chooses to fall in love with David, who flirts with all the girls. When Joan learns David didn't love her, she is heartbroken and realizes she should've listened to all the people who warned her about David and men in general.

In Address Unkown, Martin was told repetitively by Max, his good friend, to not trust Hitler and to not fall into the evil ways of society. Regardless of all these warning letters, Martin becomes a German Patriot in support of Hitler. Martin changes, but when Max points this out, Martin says he doesn't know Hitler like Martin does. When Martin finally realizes the danger Hitler is to the democratic country, it's too late. He regrets it, but it's too late.

Next, The Hired Girl is different from Address Unknown because of how Jews are treated in America vs Germany. In The Hired Girl, Jews are treated like every other person. There isn't any discrimination in America in this book. However, in Address Unknown, this isn't the case. Jews are greatly discriminated against in Germany. Max's sister died in Germany just because she said she was a Jew! As you can see, there's a clear difference in how Jews are treated in America vs Germany.

I believe the experiences of Joan in The Hired Girl was a common experience for young women in the early 1900s. Boys and girls were often punished for not doing work, swearing, lying, and more. It was very common to be spanked, lashed, hit, or slapped with a ruler.
In The Hired Girl Joan was hit by her Father and treated poorly. Several websites prove that this was a common experience for young women and men in their household. I was at first surprised to see this since if a parent hit a child today, it would be named abuse. Unfortunately, hitting was very common and lots of fathers did this as punishment to their children.

As a woman in 1910, Joan had many challenges that we don't face today. All women in the 1910s were seen as second-class citizens, no matter their class. Most women were expected to be housewives so the average woman's education was quite limited. If they attended school they were mostly taught household skills. As Joan left home the idea of being a housewife slowly disappeared. The job options were few and far between. Most women would work in a textile factory or as maids and when they could get a job they were paid much less than their male counterparts. This shows Joan's grit in surviving a world that only wanted her to ba a housewife and a baby farm.
