Let's start with the construction itself, the World Trade Center's construction was started on the North tower August 1968 with the south tower starting January 1969. It was made with construction grade steel and was made to be fire resistant suffice to say it was strong, strong enough to take a Boeing 707 and still stand. At the time it was one of the strongest built buildings in the world that's why architects around the globe were shocked when they saw the towers fall
With that said time to talk about the collapse itself we were told that the main cause was metal weakening from the jet fuel and after enough weakening the steel beams that held the tower up eventually gave way killing all inside. This has been contested because as seen before it was certified to take a hit from a Boeing 707 a plane only a few meters shorter than the 767's that hit the towers and even asbestos was used which even though deadly when inhaled has fireproofing properties. time to debunk these theories, the fireproofing material was most likely dislodged by the contact from the planes as it has been noted from several sources that there was a lack of redundancy i.e no back up fireproofing meaning that plane exposed the steel beams to the full heat of the jet fuel. Even though you may be still wondering about how the fell they were made to sustain 707's weren't they, they were, but the scenario they had planned for was a lost plane not a high speed suicide bomber this had to be planned for after in 1945 a B-25D medium bomber hopelessly lost in fog slammed into the side of the empire state building, yes that's right 9/11 wasn't the only time a plane had hit a skyscraper in Manhattan.
