I don’t know if you’ve heard of ‘Forensic Architecture’, but they’re a research agency based at Goldsmiths, University of London (where Sara Ahmed worked before she resigned in protest over student reports of sexual harassment by staff). Their work is a cross between investigative journalism (a lot of which uses digital technology to expose government/news media cover-ups) , architecture, art, and politics and one of their ongoing investigations is on ‘Israel’s Ecocide in Gaza’. In this piece, they use remote sensing, cartographic regression, and 3D modelling to show how Israeli occupation forces’ use of airborne herbicides has impacted Palestinian farmers in 2014. It might be interesting to think through the mechanics of ‘ecocide’ as another dimension to some of the other ideas that have come up in our reading together (as a lot of the specifics goes over the head of this literary researcher).

From her immigration to Mandatory Palestine in 1933 until her death in 1950 American-born Dorothy Kahn Bar-Adon worked as a reporter for The Palestine Post (later The Jerusalem Post), while freelancing for periodicals in Palestine and abroad. Bar-Adon covered life in towns, kibbutzim and Arab communities of Mandatory Palestine during this period of World War, armed conflict between Arabs and Jews, immigration to Israel of Holocaust survivors. Close to 60 years after her death, this edited collection of Bar-Adon’s writing offers a vivid view both of daily life in the Jewish and Arab communities of pre-State Israel, and of the burning issues of the day.

"For Palestine: Essays from the Tom Hurndall Memorial Lecture Group"

“I am not afraid to look.” – Tom Hurndall, 2003. On the eve of the invasion of Iraq in February 2003, Tom Hurndall, a photography student at Manchester Metropolitan University, travelled from Manchester to the Middle East to witness the horrors in Iraq and then later in Palestine. Tom was shot in the head by an Israeli soldier on 11 April 2003 whilst attempting to rescue two children trapped by Israeli sniper fire. He later died in hospital on 13 January 2004 without gaining consciousness. He is remembered for his determination to bear witness to the conflict in Palestine and his bravery to capture the atrocities directed towards the suppression of the Palestine people. This book is a collection of lectures written by reputable scholars who offer diverse perspectives on the historical, political and cultural struggles in Palestine. Encompassed in the pages are sixteen chapters produced for the Tom Hurndall Memorial Lecture Group. Unlike predecessors of this topic, this book offers a thought-provoking and comprehensive analysis of Palestine, including architectural, cultural, legal, sociological, and psychological questions, providing a larger scope of study that has not yet been done before. Ultimately, this book explores oppression in Palestine and beyond in the Middle East. The vast study and in-depth exploration makes this an ideal book for those who are interested in the Palestine conflict, Zionism, Israel and further conflict in the Middle East, as well as a necessity for those who are studying the topic in education settings.

AI, Sacred Violence, and War—The Case of Gaza Chris Hables Gray

This open access book is about how Israel is using Algorithmic Intelligence (AI) and other computer technology in military operations in the Gaza Strip to achieve goals based on ancient religious entitlements. Changes in Israel Defense Force (IDF) ethical codes and innovation policies have not led to victory, but have resulted in a wide range of War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity in a strategy focused on The Torture of Gaza, which includes ethnic cleansing and is approaching genocide. It covers the history of using AI in war, and current U.S. and Israeli military AI technologies such as Maven, Iron Dome, Pegasus, the Alchemist, Gospel, Lavender, and Where’s Daddy, all tested and perfected in the Palestinian Laboratory and marketed as such. This book also places the current data-driven and AI-directed assault on Palestine in the context of Postmodern War, which precludes military victories and enshrines the profits and power of the U.S.-Israeli military-industrial complex in a system of perpetual war and militarized technological innovation. Through an analysis of Israeli military policies, AI, sacred texts, and the basic tenets of postmodern war, the book ultimately reveals the limits of the IDF’s embrace of illusions about new technologies producing actual victory. War today is about winning hearts and minds, not body counts. As fundamentalist politics achieve more and more power around the world in the context of new information technologies, there is growing danger to the future of all of us.

Decolonial Queering in Palestine

This book provides a vivid account of the political valence of weaving queer into native positionality and the struggle for decolonisation in the settler colonial context of Palestine, referred to as decolonial queering. It discusses how processes of gender and sexuality that privilege hetero-colonising authority shaped and continue to define both the Israeli-Zionist conquest of Palestine and the Palestinian struggle for liberation, thus future imaginings of free Palestine. This account emerges directly from the voices and experiences of Palestinian activists and artists; particularly, it draws on fieldwork with Palestine’s most established queer grassroots movement, alQaws for Sexual and Gender Diversity in Palestinian Society, and a variety of artistic Palestinian productions (photography, fashion, music, performance, and video art). Offering a comprehensive and in-depth engagement with the situated context, history, and local practices of Palestinian queerness, scholars, students, and activists across (de)colonial, race, and gender/sexuality studies would appreciate its unique insights; its empirical focus also reaches to those academics in the wider fields of Middle Eastern, anthropological, and political studies.

Settling Nature: The Conservation Regime in Palestine-Israel

This book documents the widespread ecological warfare practised by the state of Israel. Recruited to the front lines are fallow deer, gazelles, wild asses, griffon vultures, pine trees, and cows—on the Israeli side—against goats, camels, olive trees, hybrid goldfinches, and akkoub—which are affiliated with the Palestinian side. These nonhuman soldiers are all the more effective because nature camouflages their tactical deployment as such.

Drawing on more than seventy interviews with Israel’s nature officials and on observations of their work, this book examines the careful orchestration of this animated warfare by Israel’s nature administration on both sides of the Green Line.
