For the past 16 years, I have taught k-12 students Mandarin Chinese in both private and public schools, as well as teaching ESL and Mandarin to college students from both China and the US. The VFE experiences
I currently work in a title 1 school, where most of students probably will not have the resources to go to China or other Chinese speaking regions. It would be great for them to still "immerse" themselves in the culture and society through utilizing these wonderful digital resources. I teach high school French at a public high school outside of Charlotte, NC, in a small, rural town in SC. I currently teach French 1 and 3 mostly, but I have designed the curriculum and taught levels 1 through 5 and AP in public and private schools. I also taught French at a community college as an adjunct faculty member. Between my B.A. and M.A. in French (literature,) I spent two school years working in a French high school as a teaching assistant in the English department.

I am grateful for the opportunity to explore VFEs with this group! These experiences have great potential in the classroom where we are more often than not confined to four walls. With this type of learning, our young people can get a closer look at other lands, peoples, and cultures in an interactive way.

A VFE could easily connect to my curriculum in a multitude of ways to complement the learning. One way in particular would be to create a VFE for a city where we have a virtual exchange partnership. Students could learn about the city/country up close before their initial meeting with their keypals. Another way I could add a VFE to the curriculum is to create one for a particular aspect of a culture, such as the summer festival of music, and then explore it in greater depth in the classroom before possibly trying to have a virtual meeting with a musician in France.
