Knowing your students

I think the most important aspect of assessing your students' knowledge is knowing them and how they learn. Make an effort to learn your students, find fun ways to assess them that move beyond testing, and most of all, support them so they can achieve what they need to. Be patient and check yourself as an educator. If a student is not showing what they "know", it may be because you (as an educator) have not taught them in a way they can understand.

-Jillian M.

Use asset-based language

By standardizing the use of asset-based language in the classroom, we show our students that knowledge can show up in different ways. Let's remind our students of their potential and give them the freedom to come to class as their true selves. Then, they'll more likely have the confidence to demonstrate what they know in ways that play to their strengths. - Wen

Incorporating interactive assessments like Kahoot, Quizizz, etc., adds more dynamic and engaging ways for students to show what they know. They not only make assessments fun and interactive, but also cater to different learning preferences and encourage active engagement in the assessment process.

-Marta

Use the Socratic seminar teaching strategy. Essentially we want to give them questions instead of answers.

Students analyze and reconsider their opinions on a given subject by asking and answering questions. You then can put students in small groups known as socratic circles. These are intended to encourage students critical thinking abilities as well as their teamwork, creativity, and intellectual curiosity. Once time is up in the group, allow them to go around sharing what they discussed and came up with.

In planning a unit, start by writing a specific, straightforward goal for the student learning. Then list multiple varied methods in which students can show their comprehension of the material that are closely aligned to that goal (ways you can assess their comprehension). By incorporating several types of assessments in different formats, you can unlock purposeful learning with demonstrated results. — Scott
