To them, instead of patriotism being a blind support for the actions of their country, it became support and advocacy for the citizens of the country.

It's hard to say who was patriotic and who wasn't, because in a way anti-war and pro-war were equally patriotic. Antiwar protesters believed that it was not necessary to be overseas, all it was doing was killing Americans for no reason at all. They wanted to save the soldiers. They also fought for the rights they had when they arrived home, because how could the US continue to send troops in when they don't have sustainability for the men home already.

The protests these groups were holding were challenging the traditional American beliefs were that, the veterans did not support the war and believed it was a waste of time because they, didn't get treated right after they came back and they were seen as murders and seen as bead people only because they were falling orders. WW2 brought the country together yet this war split the country because you had people who agreed that spreading democracy was a good idea and there are people who think letting the countries have their own government was a good idea and not messing with pre existing motos.
