Main culture is derived from its Spanish Colonial roots and traditional native customs. 80% of people in Paraguay are bilingual speaking Spanish and the native Guarani tongue. Godparents in Paraguay are given great respect and are often expected to return financial support to their godchildren. Paraguay food is based on a few basic staples, manioc, cornmeal, and cheese. Local Paraguay art is mostly based on embroidering and music. The embroidering is complex and taught children, especially girls, at a young age. Man greeting Man - Men shake hands when greeting one another Good friends and family will engage in a hearty hug or abrazo which is sometimes combined with a few firm slaps on the back.
Woman greeting Woman- At a first meeting, a light handshake will suffice, sometimes usually accompanied by a slight nod and warm smile.  Friends generally kiss each other once or twice on the cheek.
Man greeting Woman-   At a first meeting a regular handshake will do.  Friends, family and long-time acquaintances will share a light kiss on each cheek which consists of touching cheeks and making a slight kissing noise.

 Dia de San Blas is a traditional festival held on February 3 annually, celebrating Paraguay's patron saint. Saint Blas festival sees its biggest celebrations in the city of Ciudad del Este, which has week-long open-air events leading up to it.
