"Because I could not stop for Death- he kindly stopped for me-" In the first stanza, the speaker describes Death, the carriage driver as kind. This driver takes her along a slow ride past a school, sunset, home and field before reaching the cemetery. For example, an example of a metaphor being used is shown when she states "The Carriage held but just Ourselves-- and Immortality" (Dickinson, lines 3-4). These lines demonstrate the final passage to death. Furthermore, Dickinson is able to illustrate symbols throughout the poem.  For instance, she states "We passed the Setting Sun" (Dickinson, line 12). This line represents darkness and death by using the use of the setting sun. "Because I could not stop for Death- He kindly stopped for me-" Death, who is personified by the speaker comes to pick her up in which she states that she would not stop for him, he must stop for her. In the second half of the stanza, she reveals whom carriage holds: herself, death, and immortality. "The Carriage held but just Ourselves- And immortality" her belief in immortality ties to how she personifies Death as the carriage driver.
