I love this book because it is not only action packed for the soccer player/fan but particularly because it also teaches a lesson. Someone is drawing uncomplimentary editorial cartoons about Soccer goalie Mac Williams. After suspecting his best friends and teammates, Mac sets up a trap to find out who the guilty party is. Mac learned a lesson about how his own comments are hurtful to others and in the end the bonds of friendship are made stronger as the characters discuss their feelings and work things out together.

I would use this book to teach about the right and responsibility of freedom of the press, give the students the opportunity to write an editorial, and discuss ways to bully and prevent bullying. I would also like to have more of these sports books in my library to get the sports loving students a series to peak their love of reading.

I love Nancy Drew Mysteries Series because she makes solving mysteries seem so easy while battling for the good and putting some bad guys or girls behind bars for good measure. In this story Nancy is led to look for a newer will of wealthy Josiah Crowley to fulfill his promise to deserving friends and family members that Nancy befriends along the way. In the end she does locate the will with clues (safety deposit key and notepad in the old clock) which denies selfish family members (including a couple of girls who were mean to Nancy in high school) but not without danger including being locked in a closet and abandoned by the bad guys. The reader feels that they travel with Nancy as she uncovers the clues.

I love a good mystery and this book didn’t disappoint me. This action packed mystery revolved around the disappearance of Steven Royal, the programmer of the Chaos series of computer games, whose riddles took the Hardy brothers through adventures that mirrored the Chaos game’s challenges including: cable spider web complete with mechanical spider, a wolf/dog, cave with a rolling boulder that blocked their exit, a giant “ape” that used its fists as weapons, and a mansion with arrows flying out of a clock as it struck 13, trap doors, and stairs that turned into ramps. The Hardy boys had to keep on their toes but eventually nabbed the bad gal and saved the day.

I deeply love the whole Harry Potter series because the reader is transported with the magic, wonderful story that sparks the imagination, and the different sorting houses that everyone can find out where they belong based on how they imagine themselves in the story. (Yay, Team Ravenclaw) The Sorcerer’s Stone is the first book in the Harry Potter series and introduces an orphan, Harry Potter, who lives in the closet beneath the stairs in his Aunt and Uncle Dursley’s home and whose life is changed completely when he finds out he’s a wizard and to begin school at Hogwarts School of Wizardry. The reader learns with Harry as he begins to discover more about his family and discover the wizarding world. We meet Ron Weasley and Hermione Grainger who become Harry’s closest friends as Gryffindor housemates and co-conspirators in their endeavors as they protect their new home against dark wizards and dark magic.

I love this book series because of the the continuation of the book, Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg by Gail Levine by following all of our favorite fairies in their own chapter books. This chapter book follows a Light- Talent fairy named Fira, who is busy being in charge of the Full Moon Festival but has more duties than she can handle. She not only is in charge of the whole festival, but she also has to train new, trouble- making, triplet Light- Talent Neverfairies, and still be able to continue her everyday Light- Talent fairy duties on top of it. she eventually conquers all of these tasks but also learns a lesson about letting go and allow others to help out by putting her trust in them.

Samantha was my favorite of all of the American Girls in the series because it gives the readers a glimpse of the early 1900 through the eyes of a compassionate, nine-year-old orphan girl who lives with her wealthy grandmother. Meet Samantha is the first book in her series that introduces her and tells a story about how she meets her friend and future adopted sister, Nellie, who is a poor maid working next door coming there after becoming ill from working in a factory in New York City. When the household’s kind seamstress, Jessie, suddenly resigns, the two friends go on an adventure to find her. After almost getting lost, they find Jessie with a new baby boy. Upon returning home, Nellie gets ill and ends up having to leave because of an illness. Samantha gives her friend her precious new porcelain doll as a farewell present.

I love how this book is fun to read and includes comic book strips, flip-o-ramas, and fun notes to the reader to help keep their attention, though with the fun story, I do not think they are needed but they do add to the charm of this series. One especially fun thing is that the reader is asked to yell “Ka-Blooosh!” (they are assured that they won’t get in trouble) when the vinegar and baking soda react; in the back of the book the reader is given an address that he/she can send a self-addressed envelope to Scholastic and receive something fun if they got in trouble for doing this. In this edition, George and Harold must, with the help of Captain Underpants (Principal Krupp in hypnosis) fight aliens disguised as lunchroom ladies trying to take over the earth by turning the school kids and teachers into zombie nerds. (The old lunchroom ladies had quit because George and Harold tricked them into making a big mess by cooking cupcakes with baking soda and vinegar) Of course our three heroes save the day but the alien’s Extra Strength Super Powers potion that they gave Captain Underpants has lasting effects.

I love how this book is so much fun to read that the reader doesn’t realize that they are learning facts and vocabulary about our solar system. This adventure is told from Carlos’, one of Ms. Fizzle’s students, point of view as his class starts out to see if Mars is indeed red as he says in his report; however, due to the school bus getting side tracked a couple of times due to losing Carlos’ remote control robot, Rocco, and the school bus malfunctioning, the class ends up coming in contact with the sun, Neptune, and everything in between.

I love this book because it is about a grown-up version of a Junie B. Jones type character that is learning the lessons that growing up gives. After winning an award for best upside down thinker at the end of second grade, Beatrice Zinker and her best friend Lenny promise to meet back the first day of third grade wearing their all black spy outfits to sneak around and discover the truth about the other students. (At the end of the story we learn that this is to award certificates to other deserving students.) At the beginning of third grade, however, Lenny shows up with sparkles, ruffles, a skirt and a new friend named Chloe. Beatrice has to change her mindset that things can’t be the same between her and Lenny, but that their bond can grow deeper, even with the addition of more friends to their circle. In the end she offers Lenny the first certificate for “seeing the best in everyone” and offers Chloe the reward of a shared ice cream between the three new friends.

This story was very humorous so boys might also be interested in reading this. Basically, if this is an example of this series, those students who like Junie B. Jones will find this a welcomed new series for older students.

I could use this book to teach problem solving as Beatrice has a knack for changing things for the better. It is also a good starting point to discuss social issues that this age comes across such as trying to fit in. This is a great transition book to move young readers from short chapter books into children novels as it is longer than most.
