Katherine Smith
Gabi Yakovlev
Cami Krugel
Suraj Padi

Question: While creating a roller coaster, the engineers need to find where the roller coaster will touch the ground and bounce back. This roller coaster has the equation f(x)=x(x-3) (x-2)^2

Find the x intercepts of the equation and plot on a graph.

Now write end behavior in limit notation (if the roller coaster was to go on forever in to the ground).

Explanation: To find the x intercepts of the graph, separate the equation into 3 separate parts based on the terms in the parenthesis. They will be y=x, y=x-3,and y=(x-2)^2. Set y equal to zero in all of the equations. When 0=x, the x will be 0. When 0=x-3, remove the 3 from the right side by adding it to the left. The answer will be 3=X. Finally square root both sides in 0=(x-2)^2. The answer will be 0=x-2. Add 2 to both sides sides so x=2. This one will be a double root because the numbers were square rooted which gives you 2 answers. The x intercepts will be 0, 2(double root), and 3. Plot these points and graph the graph according to the root numbers. Since this is a real world equation, in reality the range would stop at 0.

If the graph went, to negative infinity you should have the left side going to negative infinity as well as the right side. You could have found this from the equation by looking at the power (even) and the leading coefficient (positive). The limit notation of this would be:
                                                     Lim          f(x)->-∞
x-> ∞
Lim          f(x)->-∞

x->-∞
