Between the 1940s and early 1950s, the United States and the Soviet Union became engaged in a series of political and economic clashes know as the Cold War.On March 21, 1947, President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9835, also known as the Loyalty Order, which mandated that all federal employees be analyzed to determine whether they were sufficiently loyal to the government. Truman’s loyalty program was a startling development for a country that prized the concepts of personal liberty and freedom of political organization. Communists were often referred to as “Reds” for their allegiance to the red Soviet flag. America feared that communism would spread out into the US. Communism was being spreading rapidly through China and other European countries. The Cold War eventually came to an end in 1991.

This map is a great example of the spread of communism and democracy during the cold war. It shows the countries' government as well as the leaders from 19455-1992. Some important events that happened during the Cold War due to the opinion on which form of government is better, were the Arms Race, Space Race, Korean War, Cuban Missile Crisis, the wars within Vietnam, and the building of the Berlin Wall are only some of the examples of the conflicts between these two great nations.

The definition of capitalism an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state. During the Cold War Americans feared the idea of communism. American people feared that idea of communism making its way into Americas free trade economy. This led to tension throughout the era of the Cold War 1945-1991. Capitalism was viewed by Americans to be the greatest form of economy in the world at this time. With capitalism came democracy, the right of citizens to vote for public officials. U.S. citizens believed that with communism along comes dictatorship, like many other countries including the USSR during this time period. The United states also had a strict trade agreement with Russia and communist controlled countries, only trading certain goods and less than 1% of our total trade during the cold war. "Commercial exchanges with the Soviet Union and the Eastern European countries in 1962 amounted to $415.7 million by value, or not much more than 1 per cent of this country's total foreign trade" (Trade With Communists, CQ Researcher). The image below shows a great illustration of how Russian communism was trying to reach out and influence other nations, like the open hand in the drawing. This drawing also shows American Capitalism and Democracy as a closed fist, trying to stop communism from spreading throughout the world, and threatening other nations.

On April 12th, 1945 Harry Truman became president After Franklin Roosevelt Died. When Truman was vice president he was not included in the top secrets, like the making of the atomic bomb. Many didn't think Truman was going to be a good president but he was able to make hard decisions in times that mattered.Truman was on of the main capitalist leaders during the cold war. On of the main things Truman did was set up the Truman doctrine. This helped every one that was allied with the US. Truman set this up so that any that was being threatened, the US would be there to help. Truman tried to lead the US to success by gaining raw material and new markets for industries, rebuilding the European government, and reuniting with Germany. This shows how Truman was a great leader for the US, and how we wanted to strive for greatness.

In Trier, Prussia Karl Marx was born in 1818. Karl was one of the oldest surviving boy in a family of nine children. Karl Marx was a journalist for 10 years for the New York Daily Tribune. Marx wrote a book, the first volume of "Capital" (Das Kapital) which explained his master work of economic theory. He put this theory out for capitalism as a dynamic system that help figure its own self-destruction and as a subsequent triumph of communism. Karl Marx spent the rest of his life working on additional volumes of manuscripts. But when Karl Marx died it remained unfinished on March 14, 1883. Many other communist leaders followed in Marx footsteps along with Vladimir Lenin of the USSR, and Joseph Stalin the communist leader of the USSR during the beginning of the Cold War. After Stalins death was the reign of many other communist leaders including Georgy Malenkov, Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brezhnev, Yuri Andropov, Konstantin Chernenko, and Mikhail Gorbachev serving as the last USSR leader from 1985-1991. Another important communist leader was Fidel Castro the communist leader during the cold war, and Cuban Missile crisis with the United States.
