In the 15th century, European rulers wanted to discover new land for three main reasons. First, to convert people to their religion. They wanted more followers of their religions so that it could eventually be the main religion. Second, to look for metals. They were looking for precious metals like gold and silver. They would bring what they found back to Europe and sell it to get more money, or they would trade it to other countries. Lastly, to take political power. If Europe found one of the countries before another country did, they could control it and take it over, giving them more land.

Portugal, Spain, the Dutch and England all reached political power because they were all getting what they wanted from other countries. Spain was focused on colonizing new land. Portugal was focused on trade. Because of the Treaty of Tordesillas, Spain and Portugal were able to trade with other countries without getting in each other's business. The Colombian exchange also played a major part in the the countries' trading. With the Colombian exchange, the countries were able to trade wanted goods like potatoes, corn, cocoa and tobacco and diseases, which weren't wanted.
