Throughout this entire movie we see the color red, from red shoes and jackets to rooms with red wallpaper and red cars. We associate the color red with intense emotions of anger and desire or with the thought of blood. While there are subtle hints of this color seen in almost every scene in The Shining, two main shots were blatantly obvious. The first time we really noticed the color red was early in the movie when the gallons of blood poured out of the elevator. This provokes a feeling of uneasiness and fear for what’s about to come. This also signifies blood will be shed which we later find to come true. The next scene where the color red is extremely prominent is when Jack is talking with Grady in the bathroom. The walls are painted a bright fire truck red alerting the audience that this is a dangerous situation. It was overly uncomfortable to see a bathroom of all places covered with flashy red paint- making us acknowledge the harsh uncertainty of the conversation about to go down. Stanley Kubrick uses red as a visual cue to convey warning signs and invoke fear. Another big sign is when we see a red car overturned on the highway just as Dick is making his way to the hotel to help the Torrance family. This is a huge sign hinting to Dick that there is something dangerous waiting for him at the hotel. This sign unfortunately couldn't save Dick from Jack’s psychotic break and dies in a pool of blood while Jack (wearing a red jacket) runs off to find his wife and son to kill next. Color played a huge role in this movie and represented the build up of chaos about to be unleashed. Through visual clues and indirect images, the audience gets even more of a fright.
