Evaluating Diversity in Marketing by Learn with NoveList

Pick one of the promotional tactics your library uses. Then, look at the last promotion your library did involving that tactic. If collection items were included, were there any books that authentically underrepresented identities in your community?
Could the amount of representation be improved? Write a few sentences reflecting on the representation, or how the promotion could have been improved with more accurate representation.

We do a great job of building inclusive collection displays. Our community is considered majority-minority, so this type of inclusion is very much at the forefront of our planning. We also have diverse experiences represented on our social media team, both through our full-time staff and our student employees, and that helps a lot when it comes to representing different perspectives and experiences.
Here's an example from Autism Acceptance Month: https://www.instagram.com/p/CrI80enAp28/

Library April Newsletter (digital)

Since we are a Catholic institution with a large demographic of Muslim students, I wanted to start my library greeting with "Eid Mubarak and Happy Easter", everyone! However, I heard from a Jewish faculty member that they were disappointed that I left out Passover in my greeting. Thankfully, I was able to change it and they were very grateful for the change. I always try to add a DEI focus in the newsletter, and April was Sexual Assault Awareness Month, especially important for college campuses to highlight. It's really not easy to do this since we are so short-staffed, and there is so much more training to do at the University-wide campus level here on DEI and accessibility.

We are a digital aggregator, and our collection is limited by what people choose to share with us. In a recent print promotion, a calendar we were highlighting images around the theme of cooking and recipes. Only two of the nine images included featured any diversity and I wish we had more examples to better reflect the makeup of our community.

I feel like this is often what happens in our promotions is that we go with generic images. Maybe it would be better for us to include more images of people from diverse backgrounds instead of just objects or more generic icons?

This is part of our Women's History Month display that was photographed and put on Instagram. We also do a good job with displays on DEI topics and our student workers and staff help inform them with their own perspectives, but I don't think our online presence represents this very well, it's usually just a photo of the display rather than substantial info on the materials included and/or the topic of the display.

Physical exhibits and displays of print materials, movies, music, etc. is a fun and meaningful way to attractively highlight EDI resources in the library. I've been the chair of exhibits committees at two different universities. We covered topics of Juneteenth, Pride Day, Native American Heritage Month, various religious holidays, etc. The decorations were beautiful and people really enjoyed looking at the books. We posted signs letting students know they could check out any books on the display. My fellow committee members also created DEI-oriented bookmarks that were printed in gorgeous colors and then laminated. Students LOVE being able to choose their bookmarks and everyone loves "freebies"!

While this post was for Easter, Ramadan, and Passover, the images are all Easter related. I could have done much better, representation wise.

I think that while I have made successful attempts to have diverse imagery and content, I can be somewhat limited by what my institution has. While we are trying to collect more diversely now (especially from LGBTQIA+ groups), our archival materials mainly center mainly around white and Black voices. When looking for content about other identities, especially Asian American and Latina/o, it can often be difficult because we don't have materials from those groups (yet). I definitely want to have better representation across the board in our social media/blog posts! It's a goal of mine
