I am always goofy in the classroom and I and always positive… and loud! They love it and I always have really high participation. 

Another strategy I use is 3,2,1 strategy where when I say 3,2,1 everyone YELLS the answer out. Students got 1 card each. Each card had a number, 1-7. Students were told to find other people who's numbers would add with theirs to reach 8. First people to do that would win.

Do ensure they learned 1 and 7 valence electrons are the most reactive, we added a couple rules. First, no double evens (no 4 + 4, or 6+2)-Only one even per group allowed. Secondly, who ever did it with fewest people (meaning pairs, not trios) would win, even if a trio did it faster.

They started figuring out that they wanted the cards with a 1 or a 7. And they started realizing if they had a card with 1 or 7, they wanted to partner with the one they didn't have.

I had students yelling at the start of a round "Who has the 7?!". It worked great.
