The Battle of Midway, fought in World War II, took place on June 5, 1942.The attack on the island of Midway, which also included a feint to Alaska by a smaller fleet, was a ploy by the Japanese to draw the American carrier fleet into a trap.

Midway Atoll is located in the North Pacific Ocean. As its name suggests, Midway is roughly equidistant between North America and Asia. Midway Atoll is a territory of the United States, and the former home of the Naval Air Facility Midway. Midway was a convenient refueling stop on transpacific flights, and was also an important stop for Navy ships. Four months after the attack of Pearl Harbor, a naval battle near Midway resulted in the U.S. Navy exacting a devastating defeat on the Japanese Navy.

"The Battle of Midway." Battle of Midway.

The Japanese plan was to lure the United States' aircraft carriers iinto a trap. The Japanese also intended to occupy Midway as part of an overall plan to extend their defensive perimeter in response to the Doolittle air raid on Tokyo. The battle of midway has a great “defense” which is why the battle of midway would help the outcome of the war.

The Battle of Midway was a turning point in the Pacific War. Before the Battle of the Coral Sea on 7-8 May 1942, the Imperial Navy of Japan had swept aside all of its enemies from the Pacific and Indian oceans. At the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Japanese won a tactical victory, but suffered an operational-level defeat: it did not invade Port Moresby in New Guinea and set up a base from which its land-based planes could dominate the skies over northern Australia. However, the overall military initiative was still in the hands of the Japanese. Their carrier striking force was still the strongest mobile air unit in the Pacific, and Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the Japanese fleet commander, hoped to use it to smash what remained of the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet.m

The Japanese strategy was to surprise the Americans due to the fact they had small numbers because of Battle of Coral Sea. The Japanese launched their attack on June 4, 1942 with heavy bombing runs on the island. They sent our recon planes to search out the U.S. Navy but couldn’t find them due to the storm. The United States intelligence was able to break to code and was aware of the oncoming attack. Masked by the storm and the already warning in advanced the U.S. bombers took off before the attack and were spared. U.S. started launching their aircraft against the Japanese fleet, while the Japanese were trying to reload their aircraft. After bombing the Japanese they surrendered.
