I started BES in January 1949, second grade (we moved over Christmas from Walterboro). Mrs. Louise Carson was the principal. Mrs. Mayes was my teacher. Third grade teacher was Mrs. Elliott, who also taught music. I started 4th grade with Mrs. Kilgore, then moved back to Walterboro until the beginning of 6th grade, when the fabulous Eleanor (Lynn) Christensen taught me - she was absolutely wonderful! Our librarian was Helen Christensen, who lived only a block from the school. We were in the brick building for 2nd and 3rd grades, then over to the pink building for 4-6. We played on the blacktop (it was really a street, of course) between the 2 buildings. It was a great place to jump rope. Our Girl Scout troop (1) also used the large room (not an auditorium, but bigger than a classroom) in the pink building for our meetings sometimes. I have photos of my 6th grade graduation - many of us stood on the steps of the pink building, clad in white.
