For me photography is an interesting art form because you are essentially capturing and manipulating real life, regardless of if you change the surroundings before hand to look strange, you are capturing a real life instance. it is poetic that with todays technology that we are not only trying to capture everything but we are also trying to change them. For me I quite like capturing images that hold a lot of detail using a macro lens.

Something I feel I need to improve on is being able to step outside of my comfort zone when I am displaying my work as I am quite plain. I feel I like a plain approach when presenting my work because I feel that the image itself needs to be idolized. I understand that this is not always the case and will try and work towards creating something more intriguing.

Small worlds & The City limits : Idea Proposal

Name: Jack Leo Daniel

Project Title:

MiniView

(new title) Observation

Idea Development:

The aim of this project is that I will create images from perspectives that both metaphorically and literally make things look a lot bigger. The theme for this project is “Small Worlds & City limits”, the way in which I have interpreted this is that I want to create images that show how small everything really is from just a simple perspective change as depending on your perspective things can look big or small. Perspective is also a very important thing in our lives, the perspective of a conversation for instance can change very drastically depending on your perspective of the problem being talked about. For example if one person is stood looking at a drawing of a 6 on the floor someone on the other side would argue it's actually a 9 because from their perspective that is what it looks like. So where possible I hope to take photos that allow for both simple and dramatic perspective changes. My main aim through this project is to make sure that I represent “Small worlds” the most as I feel that there is no city limit, there are so many different perspectives to do and I feel there are no limits to perspectives. The most important thing with doing this project is that I will most likely be needing a macro lens so that I can get better details on closer objects

Research:

 https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1kEYaLFvDUgDog1cpG-zCmsf5ASDFpGKzXg4QNQMejbk/edit?usp=sharing

Equipment/skills required:
Camera - A 600 or 800D camera will be very helpful for what it is I want to produce but if possible I would like to book out a camera that shoots 35m film in relation to Robert Frank’s work
Macro Lense - A macro lens will help me be able to get details of the so-called “small” perspective I am trying to capture.Skills wise I need to be able to spot instances where a change of perspective will make a better outcome. Patience is also a very good skill to have with this project as I will be using natural light to capture my photos and sometimes with enough patience I will get a good outcome.

Timeline:

This is a brief overview of how I feel the shoots will go as I feel that the timeline may change due to different circumstances. If anything at times I may be able to do the shoots from my own home.
Plan out day of shooting-check weather-leave early so less people-Look for places where there is a lot of colour-be patient with the natural light-take photos at multiple places-go home and review photos- edit if needed-work on presentation of the final product
This is a rough timeline of how I expect the shoot to progress. I feel that this is it in its simplest form and if needed I am able to add to a separate document a layout of how the day actually went. Doing this project is going to be somewhat difficult for me given I am working basically every other day and have long hours so I have small amounts of time in which I am able to do the work set out so I may need to adjust the timeline depending on my hours. This may also make it difficult for me to be able to get the perfect lighting too, my way around this may be to use LED or tungsten lights to create the lighting. If anything I may need to rearrange my home to capture the photographs.

Final Output:

The way I want to present these final photos is something I found difficult at first to figure out as what I am doing is somewhat broad. I want to make a zine to represent my final outcomes as I feel that a zine will make it user friendly and I also like to think that If someone wanted to have my photos they would be able to purchase a zine as opposed to creating something that is quite big.

I feel that I want to be able to do the shoot on a sunny day as I feel that I do not want to represent my images in a way that makes them look upsetting or menacing. Another thing I want to do is to use both a macro and a wide angle lens. I want to shoot with these because the macro lens will be great for when i do close up shots and the wide angle lens would be good for when I want to do angle shots from below buildings. I feel that I will end up running into some difficulty with places to go as I am limited with travel, but I will do my best with places that I am able to go to.

I felt that my shoot went okay as I feel that I got more of the small shots then I did the Big shots. The shots that I got were good and I feel that on a few of them I will need to make some adjustments as there are some that have not as much light on the main subjects and I feel it gives off a grim feeling when that is not what I want to represent. I found it frustrating that a lot of the photos I took came out blurry as when I was at the locations through the view finder and on the screen the photos were in focus, I feel that this however just be because of my eyesight but it is also a possibility that there was something wrong with the camera that I was using.

I feel that with my final outcome it may become difficult to decide how I want the layout to be as I got more of a certain type of angle but I feel that in the end I will be able to get the desired outcome.

whilst looking through photographers I actually found myself remembering films that I watched that made me think of this project, the films were 'Ant-man' and 'The Ant Bully'.

For those who don't know Ant-man is about a Marvel character who has the ability to shrink down to the size of an Ant. The Ant Bully is about a kid who gets turned into the size of an ant to teach him a lesson for terrorizing their colony. In both films we can see very good use of perspective to make them look very big or very small. I like how they were able to make them look authentic. While I would like to replicate their work I do not posses the abilities to do so I will be doing it on a lower scale.

This didn't prevent me from getting macro shots but I would have liked to have at least been able to get some shots with it. Another set back is not being able to go too far away as I am unable to travel far with regards to transport. I am still happy with the photos I was able to take.

Given that the first set of photos are good but lack story I am going to re-shoot. In the re-shoot I feel that what I need to do is incorporate something that is usually big but shrunk down possibly as a miniature or added in post. I feel by adding something into the image it can add more depth and understanding to what it is I want to show, in this case I want to show the difference in scale. Something I feel will be the best approach would be having a small car like a hot wheels in the show and make it look like someone has parked up to explore the surroundings, I feel that i could also add a miniature person but I am unsure. This will depend on what I am able to get my hands on.

My process of figuring out which Images I liked the most was simple, I was looking mainly for reflections off of the car as I felt that with the right editing I could make the colours pop just right and having the reflections on the car add to showing off the details. Another thing I was looking for was a specific area of focus, too much in one place would make the photo less interesting. I wanted the focus to be generally around the car and partly around the background as at the end of the day I wanted the car to be the main focus.

Why? I feel that I ticked all the boxes with this edit as I have managed to ensure that the colours emphasisi the car making it more of the focus whilst still mkaing sure that the colours of the flower are still vibrant and pearly. I also editied out some grass and spots from this image that you cant tell are gone which shows I was able to effectively use the clone tool. I feel that the general vibrancy fits with the make of the toy car as it is a low-rider which came out in 1977 with Harley Davidson creating the first style of low-riders, the colours show off the time period of the vehicle. This isnt an essential or needed feature to have but it makes the reflections and colours pop more.

This is my favorite image in relation to the work I aim to make as it shows miniatures using a puddle to help them. This in itself shows how big our worlds are. I love how Slinkachu has made the miniatures the main focus while also still creating an interesting background, the colours seen in the blur brings the whole image together. Over all the composition of everything works very well.

His work shows that you can create something good from simple viewpoints and all it takes is some time. The fact that he used a Leica Camera to take these photos and they turned out looking vy good shows that I am more than capable taking the pictures with any type of camera and can produce good images. I could consider using a camera that takes 35mm film to do the shoots but I feel I need to be very certain that film is what I want to use.

With these images at first I had an interesting way to present it which involved having a magnifying glass that you would have to look through to look at them but I felt that this would be tedious for people who want to look at it as I feel that not everyone would want to get involved with it. I also though that something else that I could do was display it in pieces hanging from the ceiling to make it so you have to stand in a certain place for the whole image to be shown. I felt this was a good idea too but I felt that I would end up spending a lot of money on trying to get the pieces right and I dont have a budget. In the end I felt that the imahes should just be displayed as they are as I feel that the image itself can speak more than how its displayed at times and given my message is not too big I felt that it should not be too exaggerated. I also feel that it may just be my style of work to have photos displayed in a simple way. So I will be presenting them either just hanging from the ceiling in a pleasant way possibly in a triangle formation or placed on the floor to give the impression we are looking down at it.

I Worded my statement, to reflect this, as:

'This work looks at how visual perspective can go a long way. The lives of everyone and everything can be seen as small and big but at the end of the day who is to state which is which. Is it the people and things involved or a third party observing them?'

This was later displayed on the big screens at the entrance to uni to promote our exhibition. This did not go on to be displayed with my work as a lecturer found a better way to word it which i felt brought more professionalism to my work.

I felt that it was important for me to lend a helping hand where ever I could as at the end of the day this was going to be OUR exhibition. I did my part in sanding down the walls before being painted as they had previous work on them and it had caused bumps and scuffs. I helped Kira move the sofa that they needed into the correct area and also assisted in putting up some wallpaper for them. I also moved a table that Tamara needed as it was in the wrong place originally and she felt that her space was a bit awkward. Me and Lewie had to work closely together as our prints would be close together and we needed to make sure that we had equal distance and given we were displaying in the same way we were able to help each other with the banner rails and fish wire. I also gave a general input because everyone had there own little snags and decisions to make and I feel it is important that we all communicate with each other as sometimes all thats needed is a different perspective to find the answer you need or want.

The project has taught me a lot about myself and how I view mine and others work. I have been able to grow as a creative person to understand the meaning behind images in a more detailed way to allow for me to give analytical responses to work, I was able to understand things more due to the help of my peers as I was able to gain insights into other people's thought processes behind the brief. This allowed for me to step back and view my work without bias. Not only that, I have also been able to get to grips with figuring out a better way to go about briefs going forwards, as personally I was finding it quite difficult at the start to come to grips with how I wanted to go about the brief. I found it quite difficult to figure out what “my” style was and what “my” interpretation was. I feel that looking back at how I came to the conclusion of what I wanted, I need to allow myself to have time to go over ideas more thoroughly so that I can find what fits me best.

I feel that I could have presented my work in a different way as the simplicity of the display takes away from the complexity of the meaning behind it and perhaps by having a more creative form of presenting it would allow for the meanings to be more understood and visualised. I also feel that I need to work on prioritising my time as I found myself being absent a lot and missing out on some crucial pieces of information. I aim to work on prioritising my time and making sure I stick to it to prevent myself from missing out on new things or even just so I can communicate with my lecturer about my work to avoid any worries about whether or not I have done something right.

Going forward I am going to be applying a more creative approach to how I present my work as I feel that how my work was displayed was simple and could have been representing my meanings more physically. Possibly I could look at watching tutorials on different crafts to obtain more skills to ensure that my creative pieces will be displayed in a more interesting way. I feel there are other aspects of my work that could have been improved upon; more than one print, correct print sizes, more creative outlook on displaying my work, but I feel the final product has displayed my abilities as a photographer and kept to the brief that was given to us. This has overall been a learning curve and I am proud of the work I was able to complete and look forward to what I am able to do in the future and also hope that I see some improvement in my work creatively going forwards. I see myself putting my work in another exhibition if given the chance.

When reviewing my prints for the first time I came into a bit of a snag. My prints came out in irregular sizes, this was my fault for not resizing my prints in photo shop before sending the off to print. So I had an A2 print with two small A4 prints. With this problem I had to decide what I was going to do so solve this problem. Martina, the lecturer, suggested I could print one of the more appealing shots resized o be stuck on the back of the A2 photo. This was a great idea but I had the trouble of only having two days left before the exhibition and even if I were told that the print would be ready on time I couldn't rely on it coming on time.

To help with my sudden changes I had to go and re-evaluate the space I was going to be using and so I made a more detailed layout of where my work was going to be displayed. I looked at the entire space that there was and decided that I needed to see if there were any problems that could effect my work. I started from the window and worked my way towards my work. The first problem I could see is that if the window was open that a breeze could push my work and make it start to swing back and forth. I didn't want this to happen because not only could it potentially hurt someone, even if its slightly, and it could also fall down, therefore the window had to be closed. In the space available to me I found the distance away in which I felt was the best. I did this by measuring the amount of tiles on the ceiling, as it would be hanging. I found that 3 tiles away was going to be the best as it allowed for people to move around the whole exhibition without causing any difficulty moving. This distance away also made sure that I wasnt too close to the projector on the ceiling. By suggestion my lecturer told me that If I wanted to display it from the ceiling I was going to need fishing wire and a banner rail, as if I just used fishing wire the weight if the card could cause the fish wire to rip through the print. Not only that, by having a banner rail I had a way to make sure that the print was weighted to make sure it had less of a swing.

Before anyone could put up their displays it was crucial that we all worked together to ensure that the space we were going to be working in was up to our standards. This meant giving the room a bit of a make over. Walls had to be sanded and painted, furniture moved, and an over all hoover. Over the course of a day we worked together and got it all done. Here are some behind the scenes photos.

With setting up my print the main things I struggled with was getting my fish wire to be the right length but that problem got solved easily when I was helped by Dave. He held up my print while I measured the distance from the ceiling and then held the fish wire while I cut it, then I needed some help knotting them because when I did it my knots came undone and that could have been extremely dangerous as my print could have fallen on someone, so I had Dave also help me with the knotting. Once my wires were ready the print was hung up and ready. It wasn't completely done as the artists statements were going to be printed on the day of the exhibition. Other than that my print was up and ready. In this shot you may also see white gloves, it was important that these were worn when handling the print as my bare hands could damage or leave marks on the print and I didn't want it getting ruined before it was put up.

Before I could put it up I did some tests to decided where I wanted my artist statement to go. I did this easily by getting some paper and folding it to simulate what my artist statement would look like. I came to the conclusion that I wanted it hanging next to my work as it would fit with how my print is hanging. I also felt that I wanted it on the right side because people generally read left to right so having the print on the left and the statement on the right felt right to me.
