Born James Cleveland Owens, Jesse Owens set school and world records throughout junior high and high school for track. He went to Ohio State University. Owens set three world records and tied another one while at the Big Ten Championships in 1935, while having a sore back from falling down a flight of stairs. While at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Jesse Owens became the "first American track and field athlete to win four gold medals in a single Olympiad". He spent his life working with underprivileged youth and, among several other jobs, was an inspirational speaker. After his death, his three daughters continue to carry on The Jesse Owens Foundation, which provides financial assistance, support, and services to today's youth. His accomplishments include winning all 42 events he competed in throughout his junior year at Ohio State. In 1976, Jesse Owens was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Ford, and after his death he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush.
Jesse Owens is on this list not only because of his many groundbreaking awards, but because of his influence on society. Jesse Owens' Berlin Olympic wins came at time when there was a lot of segregation and racism. He proved to Hitler and the rest of the world that Aryans are not the "dominant race" and was a role model for many people, especially youth. His work with underprivileged youth was inspirational and influential to his community and the rest of the country. On and off the track, Jesse Owens was an inspiration to people all over the world, and that is why he is on this list.

Jesse Owens Olympic Legend.
9. Eli Whitney (December 8, 1765- January 8, 1825)

At a time when cotton had become America's leading export, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, a machine that "revolutionized the production of cotton by greatly speeding up the process of removing seeds from cotton fiber." Whitney grew up in Westborough, Massachusetts and growing up became a talented inventor and mechanic. He graduated from Yale in 1792 and moved to the south, where he learned about cotton. Cotton had to be cleaned by hand, a very painful process, one plant at a time, and on average, only one pound of cotton could be cleaned a day. Whitney's cotton gin could remove seeds from 50 pounds of a cotton a day. After having patent issues with the cotton gin, Eli Whitney was contracted in 1798 by the U.S. government to produce muskets, and while doing this, promoted the idea of interchangeable arts, playing an influential role in the American system of mass-production.
Whitney deserves to be on this list because he was a very influential inventor in American history. His cotton gin allowed the U.S. to produce more cotton. This helped the United States to be able to profit more off of cotton. Whitney also came up with a way to mass-produce faster that was a huge development in manufacturing. His idea of interchangeable parts was to have standard identical parts that would make assembly faster and repair of different objects and machines easier. Whitney was influential because of the big role he played in the industrial revolution.

---.

Wilbur and Orville Wright were two of five children. They lived in Indiana and they first got interested in flying and aeronautics when their father brought them home a toy helicopter. Both brothers dropped out of high school and started their own newspaper in 1889 called the West Side News, where Wilbur was the editor and Orville was the publisher. In 1892, they opened a bike shop, fixing bikes and selling their own designs. They decided to experiment with flight and moved to Kitty Hawk, North Caroline because of the strong winds there. They studied how birds fly and flew the first controlled flight with an on-board pilot on December 17, 1903. Wilbur moved to Europe and made public flights and gave rides to people, and Orville and their younger sister Katherine joined Wilbur in Europe in 1909. They sold their planes in Europe and then returned to the United States. In 1912 Wilbur died of typhoid fever.
The Wright Brothers made this list because of their huge advancements in aviation. They created modern aviation with their airplane designs and flights. They revolutionized transportation. The Wright Brothers' Wright Flyer was the "first powered, heavier-than-air machine to achieve controlled, sustained flight with a pilot aboard."

Joseph Stalin was the dictator of the Soviet Union from 1929 to 1953. He transformed the Soviet Union into an industrial and military superpower. Born Josef Vissarionovich Djugashvili, he grew up an only child in a poor family, living in Gori, Georgia. He studied priesthood in a seminary as a teenager, and while there, he secretly began reading Karl Marx's "Communist Manifesto." After leaving school, Stalin joined the Bolsheviks, led by Vladimir Lenin, and was arrested multiple times during that time. He married seamstress Ekaterina Svanidze and they had a son, Yakov, who died in World War II. His wife died when their son was an infant and he remarried and had a boy and a girl with her, before she committed suicide. Stalin was appointed by Lenin in 1912 "to serve on the first Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party", and three years later "the Bolsheviks seized power in Russia." After Lenin's death, Stalin seized control of the Communist Russia, becoming the dictator of the Soviet Union.
Joseph Stalin made this list because of the huge impact he made on the Soviet Union. While in power, Stalin exiled or executed any of his enemies and enemies of the Communist Party, forced collectivization that killed millions in a widespread famine, expanded the secret police powers, and ruled with a totalitarian government. His elimination of his enemies and opposers of Communism and/or his policies or laws, known as the Great Purge, led to millions of people being executed, exiled, sent to Siberia, or sent to forced labor camps. He also was in power during World War II, when Russia defeated the Germans, and this was an influential and key event in the war. He was also influential during the Cold War between leading the Soviet Union into the nuclear age and aiding North Korea in the Korean War. Stalin made a huge impact during his rule, and he was responsible for the deaths of about 20 million people during his rule.

---.

Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, a huge advancement in technology. Bell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was educated there and at the University of London. He taught at a school for the deaf in England and moved to Canada with his parents in 1870. He established a school for the deaf in Boston, Massachusetts two years later, and then became a professor in speech and vocal physiology at Boston University a year later. He experimented with transmitting telegraph messages simultaneously over a single wire and with different devices that would help the deaf learn to speak. Bell formed the idea for the telephone and was granted a patent for it on March 7, 1876, and three days later he transmitted the first coherent complete sentence in history, in his laboratory. He later experimented with various other things including a vacuum-jacket respirator that lead to the iron lung and Thomas Edison's phonograph.
Alexander Graham Bell is one of the most influential people because of his invention of the telephone. His invention is one of the most used inventions, today. In the world of technology, an invention that allowed you to communicate with people from long distances, was groundbreaking. He also advocated for the deaf and founded the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf in 1890, and assisted with the careers of other scientists and founded "the journal, Science, today the premier American scientific journal , and the National Geographic Society." His achievements were very impactful on the U.S.
and the rest of the world. Bell's telephone invention led to the phones that we use today.

August 15th, 1769- May 5th, 1821
France
Napoleon was born in France in 1769, he was the second of 8 children. His family had nobility, but was not in any terms rich. Napoleon graduated from the French military academy and later crowned himself emperor in 1804. He won a war against different European nations to expand his empire. However after the French invasion of Russia he was removed form the thrown and later exiled to the Island of Elba. He later returned to power briefly, but was removed from power once again. Later he died at the age of 51.
We decided to include Napoleon on this top 10 list because he was a major leader during his time period. Napoleon sold France's Louisiana territory in North America to the United States, Which later become known as the Louisiana Purchase. Later that same year he won one of the biggest battles which was the Battle Of Austerlitz. This victory resulted in the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire and creation of the Confederation Rhine. The biggest reason Napoleon on this list is because during the years he ruled he reestablished the French aristocracy. While doing so he was also able to keep expanding his empire which shows how strong of a leader he was.

http://www.history.com/topics/napoleon

He was chief engineer for 2 years, while he was working irregular hours he wanted to invent a gas powered horse and carriage. He later invented the Quadricycle which had a metal frame and four wheels. He then quit his job and focused more on his prototype and soon after died in 1947.
Henry Ford is included on this list because his mere prototype turned into an invention that changed the world. If he did not invent the prototype who know when or is someone would of thought of the idea themselves.
