The theme of the first act is purely conflict, Cliff notes explains the conflict "between those who seize and hold power and those who are often the unwilling victims of power" (Unknown). Power and conflict are the cause of everything that has happened so far in the play.

An example of conflict in the story is when Prospero tries to sink the boat. The boat had Antonio his brother who had banished him to the island aboard. Prospero wanted revenge and for his brother to be washed up on the island where Prospero had originally been banished. Another example is when Antonio and Prospero have a fight when Antonio casts Prospero out to sea so that he can rule.
