I decided to complete my interview with two students from very different walks of life. Aviana, is in the fourth grade at Pleasant Grove Elementary located in Morrisville North Carolina. Jaylen, is in the fifth grade at Live Oak Elementary, which is located in Covington, Georgia. I chose these students for a couple of reasons; one being that they're in different grades, they're different sexes and they have two very different home lives. My goal was to see if there were any similarities or differences.

So my teacher gives us like these papers, for example - let's say we have to do this sheet with multiplication. I would write all the answers down and check them over with the paper."
Would you honestly do the questions on your own or would you copy it? I would honestly do it.
- Avianna

I will take away the fact that our students want to collaborate with each other. Aviana specifically said that she wanted to do more experiments within the classroom. Jaylen said that he'd simply like to do more collaborating with his peers. To me, this says that our students like working together. In the classroom, I believe that whoever is doing the most talking is doing the most learning.

What bubbled to the top was when Jaylen said that his favorite form of technology that his teacher uses is Powerpoint. He liked the fact that she used this tool to supplement her lessons and how it incorporated pictures to support the lesson. I have traditionally always used PowerPoint myself because it's convenient and easy. However, since being enrolled in graduate school, I have learned that there are so many options to use in the classroom that I think that PowerPoint should not be the primary source and that teachers should try different forms of technology to keep their students engaged and active in the lesson.

From this interview, I will share with my PLT that our students need to collaborate - effectively. We need to be intentional about the questions and activities that we are giving them. Being a kindergarten teacher, we are the foundation to the rest of their education. It is my goal to ensure that they are prepared for the years to come. So we need to make sure that are students are turning and talking and sharing their thoughts and we need to help them think through their thoughts and support them by guiding them when their answers may be wrong or when we know that they can give more. As a school, we are working to bring our EOG scores up. I will tell our 3rd-5th grade teachers that it is imperative that they take a course such as this one to add tools to their toolbox to better serve their students.
