In the novel Written in Stone, salmon was an essential part of the Makah tribe's culture. For generations, salmon provided a source of food, income and way of life for indigenous populations. Salmon was only to be eaten sparingly and was a delicacy at feasts and gatherings.

Bristol Bay, Alaska is home to a plethora of salmon populations. Similar to the Makah tribe, the indigenous population of Bristol Bay rely on salmon to preserve their culture. Currently, many of the inhabitants work in the salmon fisheries and eat salmon as a source of food. However, corporations are threatening the salmon populations and could destroy the indigenous culture all together. Below are the salmon fisheries in the Bristol Bay area. ( "What's At Risk." Save Bristol Bay. Accessed December 01, 2018.)

Today, the area of Bristol Bay, Alaska is being threatened by the construction of the Pebble Mine. The problem of the open-pit mining operation is that many people believe it will contaminate the lakes, rivers, and streams in the area. If salmon populations cease to exist, it will take away an essential part of indigenous culture that has been present for many generations. Below is a map of the potential water-related impacts. ("Why Is Bristol Bay Important for Salmon? And Seven Other Bristol Bay Facts." WWF. Accessed December 01, 2018.)

Corporations threat to indigenous populations

Aside from the threat to salmon populations, corporations are threatening to wipe out entire indigenous populations. This is evident not only in Bristol Bay, Alaska but in other situations such as the Keystone Pipeline. From a business perspective, they put little value on cultural awareness as it interferes with the task at hand. At the rate of businesses taking over cultural areas, indigenous populations could die out. ("Bristol Bay." The National Wildlife Federation. Accessed December 01, 2018.)
