1767- Horace de Saussure invented the first solar oven.

1839- Edmund Becquerel discovers the photovoltaic effect. This effect explains how there is a creation of voltage when a material is exposed to light

1873- Engineer Willoughby Smith discovered photoconductivity in solid selenium

1876- William Grylls Adams and Richard Evans Day, building off of Smith’s theory, were the first to observe an electrical current on selenium when exposed to light.

1905- Albert Einstein wrote a paper based on his formulation of the photon theory of light. This theory describes how light can ‘liberate’ electrons on metal surfaces.

1918- Jan Czochralski laid the foundations for silicon solar cells by finding a method of growing single-Chrystal silicon.

1954- David Chapin, Calvin Fuller, and Gerald Pearson created solar cells, the devices that convert sunlight into power.

How This Connects to Energy

Sunlight and heat is radiated through space in forms of energy. Heat from the light waves hits the aluminum and the energy is conducted through the foil to whatever is being cooked. In simple terms, the sunlight-electricity conversion happens when the electromagnetic rays and photons from the sun hit an object and the energy bounces, creating heat, thus electricity is formed.
