I will be creating costumes that will say a story themselves. I want you to look at the outfits and get a descriptive idea of the characters personalities and styles. This play takes place in the year 1947 in New Orleans. I researched dresses in the 1940's to get an idea of what was popular during that era. Blanche and Stella come from a somewhat wealthy family with social status. Even though Stella does not have much money I would dress her in classy/simple clothing. Blanche is a woman whole lost everything seeks attention from men, she has clothes that look expensive and are very flashy, but in realty it is just cheap flashy clothes. Stanley's personality is a real life douche and aggressive. A Streetcar Named Desire refers to desire as a vehicle that drives actions that eventually lead to a character's downfall. Blanches desire was sexual desire. Always wanting and needing the approval of men. That led her to be fired from her job due to her inappropriate actions with one of her students. Sallys desire was love. She loved Stanley so much that she was okay with him abusing her and would even try to justify his reasoning behind it.
