"She turned her head as there was a light dignified knocking at the front door. I went out and opened it. _____, pale as death, was standing in a puddle of water glaring tragically into my eyes."

- ‘Light dignified’ – modifying adverbs portray Gatsby is gentle (dealing with Daisy as if she’s a delicate flower – he finds her endearing). ‘Pale as death’ – simile. Adjective pale =links to early description of ‘tanned skin’. Highlights level of shock and how Daisy has completely altered his composure (unrecognisable).Class difference – grey in valley. ‘Death’ – foreshadowing how his fantasy of daisy leads him to his death. Rebirth? Acts like a different person.. façade hides true him. ‘Puddle of water’ – concrete noun puddle = puddle in dreams sign of repressed or overlooked ( Gatsby refuses to be through parties).
Soph :)

The verb lit suggests artificial light and the fact that Gatsby’s wealth is formed from artificial/ fake image of new wealth
‘Tower to cellar’ suggests this extravagant and excessive nature of Gatsby

Said by Nick. The mansion is represented as a castle of sorts. Crests an image of Gatsby as the lord of the castle and Daisy the princess he desires creating an image of high fantasy. Could represent the impossibility of Gatsby’s desires as he can only achieve them in fantasies and dreams. As the whole house is “lit” it’s is representative of Gatsby being full of hope himself.

"My house looks well, doesn't it? See how the whole front of it catches the light."

Interrogative phrase - looking for approval
‘Whole front’ - concrete noun - house is representative for Gatsby’s facade. Overly extravagant to catch people’s attention.
‘Catches the light’ - dynamic verb - manufactured to look like this. Unnatural, forced (new money), can never fit into upper class due to breeding. Also links to how Gatsby corruptly gained the American Dream.
