Dolores Huerta inspired workers and led the way for change in wages and working conditions. This low-level text follows her journey from teacher to activist, and the challenges she had to face as a woman in these roles. I can use Huerta's struggles, experiences, and the discrimination she faced growing up because of her Hispanic background.

Emma Tenayuca often walked with her grandfather. They'd stroll through a park in downtown San Antonio, Texas. It was a place where the city's Mexican American community gathered. There, anyone could stand up and speak out. Neighbors read newspapers aloud. And labor leaders talked about workers' rights. Tenayuca listened and learned. This is an article that I can use with my lessons so my students understand the struggles of Mexican-American families in the early 1900's.

In this book, the author uses a diary as a framing device, following a child who shares the hopes and fears of her journey to the United States. My Diary from Here to There/Mi diario de aqui hasta alla is bilingual, making it a strong choice for empowering Spanish-speaking students and widening the viewpoints of students who only speak English. This book is a great resource as many of my students are English learners who came here from a Spanish-speaking country.

Why Children of Immigrants Work so Hard | Colleen Bies

Children of immigrants often have a mindset learned from parents who navigated the roadblocks on their journey to freedom. This talk explores that mindset, and how it could apply to those who are generations away from the immigrant experience. This video relates to all children with immigrant parents. I believe many of my students can relate to the idea of working hard and making a better life for themselves and how to appreciate what their parents sacrificed and the struggles of being an immigrant to a new country.

A vivid depiction of the early injustices encountered by a young Mexican-American girl in San Antonio in the 1920's, this book tells the true story of Emma Tenayuca. Emma learns to care deeply about poverty and hunger during a time when many Mexican Americans were starving to death and working unreasonably long hours at slave wages in the city's pecan-shelling factories. Through astute perception, caring, and personal action, Emma begins to get involved, and eventually, at the age of 21, leads 12,000 workers in the first significant historical action in the Mexican-American struggle for justice. Emma Tenayuca's story serves as a model for young and old alike about courage, compassion, and the role everyone can play in making the world more fair.
