She continued to focus primary on her career instead of having children and lived separately from her husband at times. This is reflected in Machinal through YW's distance to George H Jones.

There were several times throughout her life when Treadwell was hospitalised due to mental illness and anxiety. This became something which she struggled with until she died in 1970, at the age of 84. This can be seen through Young Woman's constant anxiety.

In 1920, for the first time, the US census showed that a majority of Americans lived in cities with a population of over 2,500 people. Throughout the decade, the US continued to adopt and embody strong urban values, fuelled by the development of cars, roads, radio and the film industry. By 1929, however, the stock market crash known as Black Tuesday marked the beginning of the Great Depression, when international trade plunged by more than 50% and unemployment in the US rose to 25%. In Machinal, Treadwell conveys strong anti-capitalist ideas. Young Woman inhabits an urban environment which is materialistic, mechanised and soulless.
