When students pass a book quiz during ELA we give a clap out in class. This gives positive praise to that particular student and positive encouragement to the class to continue to do their best as they will be recognized for their achievements.

I greet each child by name at the door (I might be the only person to look that student in the eye and speak to them that day). I do a daily check in (I use Desmos but any interactive whiteboard will do) with some sort of poll of the day (not necessarily math related) and I ask each student to state how they feel on a scale of 1-5. They can optionally share what's going on that day (I do this, too). I read aloud all of the comments. The students love it and it helps us all feel connected.

Rinaldi & I are sending biweekly emails to all of our parents with an overview of what's happening in our classes. Additionally, we have an optional family math challenge and we put each student on a wheel of names to choose 1 winner for each class. Winners can choose a prize, everything from HW passes or 3 days in a rolling chair. We love creating a connection between our students in class and their families.

Use of SOAR Scratch off with specific goals for students. They have clear expectations specific to the student and is connected to a reward. If the goal is met, then the student gets to scratch of the surprise reward located at the bottom of their sheet. The reward is covered with a scratch off sticker which adds an element of surprise. Basketball time, a snack, weight room time, homework pass, SOAR Activity pass, busboard writer, and dojo points are a few options used as rewards.

Martucci/Hodge - Implementing a tiered program called Unique. The students are given 3 objectives based off one goal that is aligned with their DLM testing. We can meet students at the most basic level to a more challenging level in different academic domains.

Read 180 has built in tiers for academics. Based on their Lexile scores students are placed on software, it gives a range for independent reading, and I am able to group them for small group instruction.

The consequence for their actions should be logical. Instead of giving lunch detention where they have to remain silent for 40 minutes when students are being disrespectful to you during class, make them attend a lunch session with a counselor on the importance of giving respect to their teachers

I have done PBIS nominations, but I'd like to start doing more casual PBIS "shout outs" during class time to give immediate, specific positive reinforcement to students who are meeting SOAR expectations. I have to be more intentional in doing this while monitoring the class.

The organization and the classroom's overall aesthetic impacts the mood of the students. Using artwork or even painting the room a more inviting color than "institutional white" directly impacts the students' focus and learning.

Steve speaks about including a "header and footer". To make sure that students see the expectations everywhere. It is on the walls above their heads, also on their desks to see it right in front of them. It is also on the top of their paper as well as the bottom of their paper for repetition and support. Students are surrounded daily by positive support and expectations.

Use a "Give me Five" stick to interact with all students in the halls, bring a smile to some of their faces (especially those who walk around trying to be invisible).

I provide a classroom environment that prioritizes personal needs (when needed; head down, a cat nap; mindful music; flexible seating) over work (providing a plan to make up for missed work)

I am using the Calm app for mindfulness/quiet 10 min meditation at the beginning of classes when transitions are overwhelming.

I use doodle notes that allow for mindfulness and coloring in our interactive notebooks. Coloring is calming but also a great study strategy.
