My initial reaction to the quote was that it was about someone mourning the death of a loved one or someone who they truly cared about. It made me think of someone who was in shock from the news that a person special to them had died and it seemed as if they were trying to find some justification of the death. I picked this quote due to the fact that death is something many find hard to deal with, me being one of those people. After the death of my uncle, I quite frequently asked myself "why him?" This quote reminded me of those thoughts, making me think that by pursuing it maybe I could find a sense of peace with the topic of death.

Instance #1-
I was speaking to my Father about the death of my uncle when I mentioned the quote,"Did heaven look on, And would not take their part?" When we had received the phone call that said he had passed away, my father quickly gathered his things and left on a plane to Maryland that night to join his family in mourning. Due to him leaving so abruptly, we never truly had the chance to talk to each other and how we were feeling. Upon his return, I picked him up from the airport where we began talking about our feelings and how we were dealing with his death. I mentioned the quote after he said to me, "Lex, you will learn very quickly emotions will be the death of you if you let them" and my father simply looked at me as if I had something wrong with me and continued on with the conversation about our emotions. He never once bought it up with me or asked what it meant, he just simply overlooked it as if it was never said.

Instance #2-
This weekend I was on my monthly trip to Los Angeles but instead of going to see my Godfather, I brought my friends along for a day in the city. The day had not gone as planned as we left much later than we had originally aimed for and while on the way got stuck in traffic. After an hour of music we decided to talk about our lives and how they are going to change in a few short months but as soon as my friends asked how I was feeling about college, I said "Did heaven look on, And would not take their part?" Since neither of the friends with me are in AP Literature, they both had no clue what was going on. Neither of them have read Macbeth and did not understand the context of what I was saying until they asked for an explanation of what I had said and why. Even with an explanation, they looked at me in disbelief I had just said the quote and without a blink of an eye turned on Kayne West's song "Famous" and we started singing the lyrics for the tenth time that hour.

Instance #3-
My Mother went to Las Vegas this weekend with my brother for a baseball tournament. On about the thirtieth time she called me to confirm her precious dog Bronx was alive and well, she began asking me about my life. We got to talking about everything going on in school and all of my friends when I presented her with the quote in the middle of the conversation. Through the phone I heard the shock going throughout her mind of wondering what I had just said to her but instead of ignoring it like my Father did, she began asking questions. The questions began with "Alexis what are you talking about?', but ended with "I am glad we had this conversation." Although we did not directly talk about the quote, it brought up the issues I have with death and she tried to get to the root of my problems. My Mother and I bonded over this quote because we were able to work out some of my issues I have with people dying.

Event #1-
The quote, "Did heaven look on,
And would not take their part?", meant while Macduff's family was being murdered, did the heavens above see the act in progress and not do anything to stop it? The meaning behind this quote relates the the most recent election of the next President of the United States. While many people are upset with the election of Donald Trump, almost half of American people who were eligible to vote did not do so. They saw the polls all day and even though places like CNN and Fox had Secretary Clinton winning by a landslide, the actual results shown throughout the day were the complete opposite. If so many Americans are upset based upon the fact that Donald Trump will be the next President of the Untied States, the great amount of people who did not vote should have done so in order to stop the election from ending the way it did. Macduff truly had no control over his family dying because he did not know until after the fact. What Macduff was saying was that why wouldn't the people in heaven not stop the murder from occurring which is why the quote was significant to the most recent presidential election. People knew Trump was ahead in the polls and to stop that they could have made a difference and voted but instead they did not stop it, just as the heavens did not stop Macduff's family from being killed.

http://mashable.com/2016/11/09/voting-poll-numbers/#VoW6WYQtaqqN

Event #2-
In addition to the latest election, the quote" Did heaven look on,

And would not take their part?" can be related to the shooting in El Cajon that took place in October. Police officers were said to have shot a man in El Cajon who was unarmed and not provoking the shooting to take place. While the man was unarmed, he had begun threatening the police officer and acted as if he hd a gun present with him Police officers are trained to protect themselves and anything that is presented as a threat to them is to not be taken lightly. Unfortunately, not everyone sees how police officers are trained and responded to the shooting as Macduff replied to the killing of his family. The shooting related to the quote due to the fact that in response to the shooting people began to riot wile asking why no one had stopped the action of the man being killed just as Macduff had done in a sense. Macduff asked if the heavens saw the actions taking place while the public asked if other community members saw the shooting taking place but did not stop it. It also related to the quote because the quote also represented Macduff starting to grieve the loss of his family and people started to riot as they began to grieve the loss of Alfred Orlando, the man who was shot in El Cajon. The significance
behind the connection of both events is that after a dramatic incident, people reacted in a way not everyone saw coming but in the end was justified based upon the events that sparked their reactions.
http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/30/us/california-police-shooting-video/

Event #3-
In May, Grossmont High School put on a campaign for a student named Ryan in order to try and get him to meet the Captain America characters. The characters from that movie were his favorite and Ryan had been battling cancer for quite awhile but the characters were his inspiration for living. Unfortunately in September, Ryan lost his battle to cancer. After the news of his death became public, thousands of people mourned the death as well as questioned why he had to be the one to pass away so soon. This event was much like the quote where Macduff mourned the loss of his family due to the fact that these were all events out of peoples control. Macduff who longed for his family to be alive again as well as the many people who longed for Ryan to be alive and well all had no control of either situations and their outcomes. The huge significance to Ryan's death was due to the thousands of people who were affected by his death in our surrounding community but as well as other places. The campaign was so large that the characters from Captain American came to visit and honor him for his strength. The death of Macduff's family was significant because it caused Macduff to have a vengeance for Macbeth leading to Macduff behaving Macbeth at the end of the play. Both of these incidents of death were different yet similar because people were greatly affected by them and none of those people had control over them.
http://www.10news.com/news/grossmont-high-student-battling-cancer-dies-090316

Life As We Know It-
In the movie Life As We Know It, a man and a woman are given a child to raise after their best friends die in a fatal car accident. The movie shows the struggles both the man and woman go through while grieving the losses of their best friends and raising their child together. They both on countless occasions tried to throw in the towel by giving the child up for adoption in order to have an easier life but in the end made it their mission to work together to battle the grief they felt while raising an amazing child who could be her parents legacy. This movie relates to the quote because in the movie the woman often asked why God did not protect them in order to live to see their child grow up. Macduff asked if the heavens above were watching, why would they let the murder of his family happen and they not try and stop it? He also made a mission to kill Macbeth after he dealt with his grief while in the movie the man and the woman made a mission to raise the child to the best of their ability after dealing with their grief. Although both missions did not have the same goals in the end, the meaning behind them were the same due to the fact that both Macduff and the man and woman had to grieve before finding their mission to continue on with their lives and persevere.

After all of the research behind this quote, now it means to me the questions behind death. IT represents the questions people go through trying to cope with death and how hard it can be. Harsh reactions towards death happen the people are blindsided by the event and this quote was a prime example of that. The significance of the quote to others shows emotions they may have felt during or long after the death of someone they were close to but to Shakespeare this quote is significant because it finally shows the shift of people from Macbeth's side in the play to the revolt against him and his kingdom. This quote truly became significant to me because it represented some of the emotions I have had to deal with in the past month. It showed me that I was not alone when it came to the emotions I felt regarding death and it gave me a sense of relief that others had the questions I had then someone does die.
