The olympic competition during the Cold War was more of a political battle for the US and the USSR. Both desperately wanted to prove that they were better than the other, and one of the ways they did this was competition against their athletes.

The 1980 olympics were held in Moscow, Russia. Although, two weeks before the olympics were suppossed to start, Russia invaded Afghanistan. The US started a boycott against Russia to not go to their olympics because of this outrage. 65 countries dropped out of the olympics that year. Then when the 1984 olympics were held in Los Angles, United States, the Soviets boycotted that event due to the worry of their safety concerns.

The battle on ice was significant because the US and the USSR viewed the medal rankings as a political competition. They were trying to see if communism or capitalism could produce better athletes. The Miracle on Ice was significant because America won the game even when they were expecting fail. This devastated the Soviets as they previously always beat us in Ice hockey.

Between the USSR and the US the USSR was more dominant in olympic competition. They were exceptional at Ice hockey, basketball, gymnastics, wrestling, volleyball, and figure skating. Also, during the Cold War at the 1956 olympics, Russia beat the US's olympic world record earning 98 medals with 37 of them being gold.

The games became a symbol of the cold war as it quickly turned into a power struggle between communist countries and capitalist countries during this period. So the games became a symbol of communism vs capitalism which is what happened during the cold war.

I personally think that the 1992 olympics signified the end of the cold war. This olympics took place a year after the war officially ended. That olympics was the most successful olympics at that point with more than 9,300 athletes competing from 169 countries. It was pretty peaceful due to the dramatic political effects from the cold war.

The olympics created a battle for dominance over the other country as they both wanted to prove how strong their countries were. They competed to have better athletes than one another to see which country could win more in the olympics. Lastly, the games became politically motivated as it became a battle of communism vs capitalism.

Even though the Olympics aren't supposed to involve politics, sometimes nowadays the olympics are used to make political statements. Although it is not as severe as it was during the cold war. Countries now have a lot of respect for one another (Even if they're big competitors) during the games and their hasn't been any recent boycotting. Also there is less pressure on athletes now as they don't have to fight to prove whether communism or capitalism is better.
