For many years, the community has commonly referred to Park #484 as Madigan Park in honor of Michael J. Madigan Sr., a lifelong resident of Chicago, prominent community member and civic leader from the Southwest Side. Madigan Sr. was active in charitable works and volunteerism at St. Adrian Parish Church. He worked as an investigator for the Illinois Liquor Control Commission and as an assistant to Cook County Clerk Michael J. Flynn. He worked closely with the late Mayor Richard J. Daley and served as longtime ward superintendent in a number of wards throughout the city including his home 13th Ward. Madigan died in 1966 at the age of 60. He and his wife Mary Rita raised two children, Marita and Michael J. Madigan, Jr

Park-goers can participate in seasonal sports, preschool activities, gymnastics, cheerleading, arts & crafts, aerobics, walking club, and senior club. After school programs are offered throughout the school year, and in the summer youth can participate in the Chicago Park District’s popular six-week day camp.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM).  This is a time for advocates, survivors, their loved ones, and the community to come together to talk openly about sexual violence to support survivors, increase knowledge and awareness, and identify strategies and resources to prevent sexual violence.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, an opportunity to update your knowledge about alcohol use disorder (AUD) and the adverse impact of alcohol misuse on health and society. Alcohol-related problems continue to take a heavy toll on individuals, families, and communities. Researchers estimate that each year there are more than 178,000 alcohol-related deaths, making alcohol a leading preventable cause of death in the United States. In addition, more than 200 disease and injury-related conditions are associated with alcohol misuse.

“Everyone should have access to safe, reliable, and affordable electricity, which is why ComEd remains committed to supporting all our customers, particularly those who are struggling most,” said Gil Quiniones, President and CEO of ComEd. “By working with renewable energy leaders like Cenergy and ESP, we can expand access to solar benefits while providing substantial, targeted relief to income-eligible customers who have past-due balances. This long-term commitment is an outgrowth of our mission to power lives and strengthen communities across northern Illinois.”

Funding for the grants will be derived from Cenergy and ESP’s community solar projects located primarily within the ComEd service territory. For instance, a few initial projects are located in Kankakee County, Dekalb County and Livingston County. The program structure ensures that a significant portion of the projects’ financial value is directly passed through to low-income participants in the form of utility bill credits.

“Cenergy is deeply committed to ensuring that the benefits of clean power generation flow through to local communities in meaningful ways, and we are excited to collaborate with ComEd and ESP on this Low-Income Grant Program,” said William Pham, CEO of Cenergy.

“This partnership with ComEd is a blueprint for how renewable energy developers can make a direct, tangible impact on energy equity,” said Rodolfo Hernandez, Manager of ESP. “This program is consistent with our mission to benefit low-income households with our projects.”

ComEd will receive the grant funds annually from Cenergy and ESP, reach out directly to eligible customers on the qualifications to apply, and apply bill credits to the accounts of customers who consent to participate. This streamlined process ensures maximum impact and efficiency in delivering the assistance.

ComEd’s participation in Cenergy and ESP’s Low-Income Grant Program is the energy company’s latest effort move to provide relief to customers dealing with high energy bills. In June, ComEd launched a $10 million Customer Relief Fund that is expected to help more than 30,000 eligible customers who are behind on their energy bills. This fund acts as a bridge Low-Income Discount (LID), which will enable qualifying income-eligible customers to receive a percentage-based discount on their monthly electric bill determined by income level. So far this year, ComEd has helped connect over 144,000 customers with more than $74 million in grants and other bill support. According to the most recent Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBS), in 2023.

• Two in ten students seriously considered attempting suicide, and almost one in ten students attempted suicide.

• Female and LGBTQ+ students were more likely than their peers to experience persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, poor mental health, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

• Four in ten high school students experienced persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness.

• Preteen suicide rates have increased 8% annually between 2008–2022.

• The total number of suicide deaths for those 10-14 in 2023 was 481. This was the second leading cause of death in the age group, second only to unintentional injuries.

Through funding thanks to the Illinois Department of Public Health, the entire MHTTA team is thrilled to share School Connectedness: A Vital Tool in Youth Suicide Prevention. 

This resource, based on the concept of School Connectedness, defines what it is and how we can best utilize it as a protective factor against teen suicide. It also provides specific tips on how to implement it in your community. 

This resource is best used as a guide and conversation starter for communities and school districts. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, administrator, or community leader, there is essential information and helpful tips on utilizing school connectedness in your school and community.

Chicago Restaurants Offering Free, Discounted Meals During SNAP Freeze

Chesa’s, a southern-inspired bistro, will serve free hot meals every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. You can donate to the initiative through GoFundMe.

SNAP recipients can receive $50 off for SNAP-eligible grocery items and free delivery via GoPuff.

Kale My Name

Vegan staple Kale My Name is providing free meals to anyone affected by the SNAP cuts from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. every day.

Lou Malnati’s

Lou Malnati’s is giving out $10 coupons through Sunday, November 16, to people who are food insecure through a joint program with the Lawndale Community Church, redeemable for a large deep-dish or thin-crust pizza.

Manny’s Delicatessen

The longstanding Jewish deli, Manny’s, is offering a corned beef, pastrami, or turkey sandwich, a potato pancake, pickles, and a soft drink to the first 300 SNAP recipients each day for the next week. You can donate to the GoFundMe to support the deli.

October Cafe will provide free meals from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. to SNAP recipients through November.

SNAP recipients can receive a free kids’ cheese pizza. Furloughed employees can access their Monday special any time during any day of the week.

Penelope’s Vegan Taqueria

Penelope’s Vegan Taqueria is offering free meals to kids and pregnant women from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Children can choose between tacos or quesadillas with rice, beans, and corn, and mothers can choose between tacos or enchiladas for dinner, with agua fresca. The offer is available at all restaurant locations: Pilsen, River North, and Andersonville.

Spoken Cafe 

Spoken Cafe hosts Community Supper Mondays each week from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. These pay-what-you-can dinners are open to everyone, and proceeds will benefit local food pantries. Each meal includes spaghetti and fresh bread, with gluten-free and vegan options available.

SNAP recipients can receive a free 16-inch pizza with a SNAP card and ID through November 16.

The Soul Food Lounge in North Lawndale is serving free meals every Tuesday between noon and 3 p.m. You can donate to Soul Food Lounge via GoFundMe.

Wooden Paddle

Throughout November, Wooden Paddle will offer free lunches to SNAP recipients from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Supporters can donate to the lunch fund online.

IDHS anticipates that the remaining benefit payments will be made over the coming days, with all SNAP recipients receiving their full November benefits by Nov. 20.

The lapse in SNAP funding created unnecessary hardship for 1.9 million Illinoisans and businesses who rely on this federally funded program. The crisis was entirely avoidable – the Trump Administration had the funding to fully support SNAP but chose not to, putting tens of millions of Americans at risk of hunger.

1.9 million Illinoisans rely on SNAP for healthy food. 45% of SNAP households have children, 44% have a person with a disability, and 37% include older adults living in the home.

IDHS is grateful for all the partners who came together to defend this program and who valiantly tried fill the unfillable gaps, especially during this season that is meant for giving thanks and sharing with those in need.

Nonetheless, SNAP is still in trouble. H.R.1 – Trump’s budget bill – seeks to disqualify many of the hardworking families and individuals who rely on it for nutrition. Continue to visit SNAP Federal Impact Center for updates and resources to find food.
