Will to stop the monarchy and its arbitrary system --> justice must be ruled on texts of laws (eg. Declaration of Human Rights), citizenship will dominate (values of this revolution)

Ernest (1890): 'The French Revolution is the first of the humankind to take its own reins and direct itself': wrong --> two main revolutions before ("Atlantic revolutions" = English Revolution (1688-1689) and American (1775-1883)

Plus: idealization of the Revolution --> wrong it is not peaceful: beheading of the King + death of many men (eg. Robespierre and the Terror regime)

Historicism: The idea that cultual inheritance, intellectual currents and values are linked to specific moments of history, that need to be put in context. 


Teleology: p.111 'revolutionary impulse fuels towards freedom' --> study of the meaning?  causal relationship, but is it really the case in this article? Paradoxical tension between the idea of France's many revolutions participating in a teleological impulse towards the actualisation of France's "fundamental" values, yet at the same time exiting the kind of structured, linear conception of a teleological notion of history. Revolution is not only chaos, the destruction of a previously established order to install a new one, it is cyclical, literally a return to point 0: if a nation is in constant revolution, is it really progressing?

Are these children really empowered in those picture books? 
(compare to the other readings: in the picturebooks Beauvais describes, the children are reduced to metaphors/symbols for the nation, and the picturebooks seem to participate to a larger national project of indoctrination/celebration of the "revolutionary tradition")
To what extent do (French) citizens participate in collective censorship ? 
What are the limits to this narrative of revolution?
