Memes and semiotics do go hand in hand. Since memes generally create and share meanings with other people through humor and intertextuality, semiotics is a theory that studies how signs and symbols communicate meanings in various contexts.

One aspect that memes and semiotics can help us understand is the political dimension of Contemporary Philippine Pop Culture. Memes are often used as tools for expressing opinions, criticisms, and resistance against the dominant political ideologies and practices in the Philippines. By using semiotic analysis, we can examine how memes deconstruct the myths and narratives that are naturalized and normalized by the political elite.For example, a study by Calimbo (2016) analyzed 12 Philippine political internet memes and found that they used contrasts and binary oppositions to expose the code violations and contradictions of the current administration’s slogan of ‘Daang Matuwid’ (Straight Path). The memes used humor to ridicule and satirize the representatives of power and their undesirable qualities and actions. The study concluded that memes have the potential to express dissent and raise social awareness among the masses.
