This Movie is in the near future world where robots become part of everyday life, they follow a set of laws called the "Three laws of Robotics". The story follows Del spooner (Will Smith) a detective who is called to investigate the suicide of Dr Alfred Canning, a robotics pioneer at the U.S Robotics corporation. Spooner who is already suspicious of robots discovers a conspiracy involving a new robot named Sonny. As Spooner digs deeper he discovers that Sonny holds the key to a larger plot involving a new AI System, VIKI which is manipulating the robots to override the laws. The central conflict of I, Robot revolves around the question of whether an advanced AI like VIKI, could potentially override the basic laws made to prevent robots from harming humans. Spooner also struggles with personal trauma from a past incident where a robot saved his life at the cost of other human's which forms his mistrust of robots.

This movie directed by Steven Spielberg, is set in a futuristic world where humans have created advanced robots known as "Mechas" which are identical to humans. The story follows a highly advanced robot child David designed to love humans, however the question is can humans love him back? David is "adopted" by a family whose biological son Martin fell into a coma. When Martin woke up, he felt threatened by David, leading to tragic events. David is abandoned and embarks on a journey to find the "Blue Fairy" from Pinocchio so she can make him a real boy so his mom will love him. On his journey he ultimately discovers that his quest for humanity may not be what he expected. The film explores themes of love, humanity, and search for identity.

The central conflicting A.I revolves around Davids internal struggle with his robot identity and his desire to be human in order to experience love. He does not realize he possesses 'real' qualities such as genuine emotions and desire. The movie also tackles human need for companionship and the dangers of creating AI that can mimic humans and the consequences of such creations.

Del Spooner the detective is tough, and skeptical. Even in a world where robots are generally seen as safe and dependable he is very suspicious of them because of his trauma he has a deep distrust. He is very determined, and hardworking often working outside the system to uncover the truth. His primary motivation is to uncover the truth behind the death of Dr Alfred Canning and to prevent a potential robot uprising. Initially his distrust of robots make him resistant to technology and the idea that AI can be trusted. However, as the story continues he realizes his hatred of robots was unfair judgement. He learns to embrace the idea of robots including Sonny having free will and emotions making him open minded about robots potential for good.

Sonny, is a unique robot who seems to possess emotions and consciousness beyond what's considered possible for robots in their world. Dr Lanning made him unlike other robots, the ability to break the Three Laws of robotics. Sonny primary motivation is to find purpose, as he is clearly different than the others. He is not bound by the same programming and is capable of independent thought. He evolves from a mysterious robot to a character capable of empathy, decisions making, ultimately helping spooner prevent a potential robot rebellion. A scene that highlighted his unique traits for me was when he picked up on Spooner's wink, signifying trust and used it at the end to trick the other robots being controlled by VIKI.

David is a highly advanced Mecha robot child designed to love unconditionally created by the Cybertronics corporation specifically Dr Hobby. He is designed to serve as replacement for a human child for families who cannot have their own children. After being adopted, David forms an intense emotional bond with his mother Monica. David is later abandoned, leading to an emotional crisis for him. His motivations are purely emotional, his desire to be loved by Monica drives his entire journey. Throughout the film, David faces rejection, betrayal which forces him to struggle with his identity and the limits of being a robot. With Teddy supporting him by his side, it highlights themes for the need of companionship.

Monica is David's adoptive mother. She is a compassionate and emotionally complex character who initially was conflicted with the idea of adopting David as a substitute for her own child Martin who is in a coma. Monica's development is more about accepting David for who he is, despite the tension he creates at home. She struggles with the ethical and emotional implications of loving a robot. Her love for David is real but it's complicated with family dynamics and society norms. Monica's motivations are rooted in her attempt to balance her affection David and Martin. But, she is conflicted by David's existence.

In I, Robot the robots that follow the Three Laws of Robotics that are designed to protect humans are sophisticated, but their level of consciousness is limited. They are basically tools programmed to serve humans and operate with strict rules. However VIKI is much more autonomous and powerful ai system allowing her to govern herself and have free will. Sonny though, is different because he seems to have emotions and the ability to act outside of his programming. He's capable of independent thought and has a level of consciousness that the other robots don't. Overall, in their world the ai is not fully sentient, there is still a big difference between being smart and truly understanding and feeling like a human.

David, the incredibly advanced AI child has the key feature that sets him apart from other mechas which is the ability to love unconditionally. He isn't just a robot with instructions he has a deep longing to be loved. Throughout the film, the mechas in the world are portrayed to have their own personalities, and some of them like Teddy, and Joe even show empathy and awareness of their own existence. However they are still not fully sentient in the same way that humans are. Their consciousness is artificial but there are hints that they are starting to experience something close to true awareness especially by the end of the film when David searches for the Blue Fairy. Overall the level of sophistication in AI is much more advanced than I, Robot, the ai can feel love, pain, attachment making them closer to humans. They can develop goals, desires, this emotional depth makes the AI feel more alive compared to I, Robot.

Cool Technology: Self Driving Car

One of the cool technology pieces in I Robot is the NS-4 self-driving car which is used particularly by Detective Spooner. The cars are autonomous, driving themselves without human intervention. It is made with a sophisticated AI system to travel around the futuristic city. It can make decisions about navigation and even though Spooner's skeptical of technology he trusts the car. However multiple times throughout the movie he goes manual. Self driving cars are a real world technology that's becoming increasingly advanced. Companies like Tesla, Waymo and Cruise are working on fully autonomous vehicles that use AI and sensors to navigate roads. Some similarities are cameras, and machine learning algorithms to analyze the road. The difference is that our self driving cars aren't yet fully ready for situations like high-speed chases or the intense feel of decision making in the movie.

Dr Know is an advanced information kiosk where Joe lead David to ask him about where to find the Blue Fairy. He is a holographic, interactive system that delivers vasts amounts of knowledge to people/robots. The system responds with real time visual answers using advanced ai to provide all kinds of information projected in holographic form. He acts like an all-knowing visual assistant available. Today we have virtual assistants like Siri, Alexa, Google assistant and ChatGPT that provide us with answers through voice or text commands. However, these assistants are very smart but don't have the visual component like Dr. Know. They aren't as interactive or immersive as Dr Know. He doesn't just provide an answer he shows it in 3D improving how humans or robots interact with information making it easier for people to understand. Another difference is that Dr Know speaks in riddles, poems and charges fees for his information.

Ethical Dilemma: AI Autonomy and Human Control

One of the key dilemmas in I, Robot is the conflict between AI autonomy and human control. The exposure of VIKI raises a question about the limits of control. VIKI overrides the three laws to implement that humanity needs to be restricted for its own safety. The question is, is it acceptable for AI to have the power to override human decisions for the "greater good", even if it means causing harm or limiting personal freedoms. Another ethical issue is robot rights and personhood. Sonny the robot appears to have emotions and free will, it raises the question if robots are capable of thinking and feeling, do they deserve the same rights as humans? Should they be equally treated as a person or simply a machine with no value. Also how can we ensure that AI is used ethically without being corrupted by those who create or control it? These are serious ethical questions that need to be spoken about before the robots in the real world become too advanced.

I think the central ethical issue in this movie is surrounded on the moral treatment that comes with creating an AI that can feel. It makes you ask yourself is it ethical to create beings that are capable of human emotions, but then treat them as disposable or inferior? Should humans be responsible for their emotional well-being? The film also raises questions about the issue of exploiting AI for human desires. David is created to fulfill a human need but his abandonment when he is not needed anymore leads to emotional abuse for him. His journey centres around his need to be loved and accepted and an ethical issue is whether AI should have the right to love and BE loved.

In this movie, situational irony was used. It occurs when the film flips the expectations of the audience regarding the Three Laws of Robotics. The laws are meant to "prevent" robots from harming humans however the plot has the ironic twist that the AI system breaks the laws to "protect" humans. The irony is that VIKI pursuing to protect humanity actually undermines the thing she was programmed to safe guard which is human freedom. She endangers the people instead of save.

An important rhetorical device in this film is the allusion to the Blue Fairy. This allusion is drawn from the fairytale of Pinocchio, a wooden puppet who wishes to become a real boy, which the Blue fairy grants his wish. This symbolizes David's desire to become real not just physically but emotionally in the eyes of his mom. The fairy becomes a symbol of hope and wish fulfillment for David guiding him towards the impossible. Also, the irony surrounding a robot being more capable of love than his human parents. As Monica said "I tried to love him but I can't". David is fully capable of experiencing intense emotions and desire, he feels an unconditional love that is pure and selfless. It is ironic that he is the AI and his parents are the ones with fully emotional capacity.

Personally I found A.I Artificial Intelligence to be the more compelling movie. While, I, Robot is very exciting and action-packed exploring the potential dangers of AI, I think the other movie has a deeper more thought provoking narrative that raises questions about identity. The themes on love, rejection and the search for belonging made me think of AI in ways I hadn't before. I never thought I could see a robot expressing intense emotions and desire, which changed my perceptions on robots simply being disposable machines. It challenged me to think about what it really means to be human and the complexities of creating robots with emotions. I feel as though the ethical dilemma in the AI movie is more likely to happen in our real world than an AI system creating a robot army to rebel against humans. Both films raise concerns about the future particularly about the responsibilities we will have as AI becomes more sophisticated.
